How likely is this to make me money? Use one of those sophisticated AIs for art, and make a hentai game, get paid on Patreon.

Unlikely.
You are compeeting with thousent of others.
Unless you do something unique your game will disapear among the thousent of other games trying to draw attention.
And even if you do something unique there is a large chance of it being overlooked by people.
Posting it at the wrong time, Not having an attention grabbing artwork.
A lack of good tag's of discription of the game.

Think of making a game like gambling.
You can make it big.
But for every person that makes it big thousents are wasting there money hoping to be a lucky one.

Is this likely to make a person money? Assuming my writing is decent and sexy, but the art is all generated by AI.
Many people won't give you money or even play your game on the principle that it's AI art. So you are cutting away people on that merit alone, and then you have to compete with every other game as well.

So yeah, you'd be competing with a handicap, but is it possible? Sure, likely? not particularly.

Malaficus says it well, particularly if you are making your first game without any name recognition, portfolio, etc. And I agree with chalker to a point - though, if you are able to get the art from the AI consistent and actually able to be on character throughout a game, I believe you will attract greater interest than those who choose not to play. However, that's a BIG if.

Still, you don't mention how much money is "making money."

After a couple of years of active development, the likelihood for:
  • 100 USD per month is about 50/50
  • 1,000 USD per month is about 10/90
  • 2,500 USD per month is about 5/95
  • 4,000 USD per month is about 2/98
That being said, don't forget there are expenses involved with any development, including hardware and electricity.

a huge problem with AI art will certainly be that it's all gonna look like the same one guy made all of it. the more you lean on AI the less it'll differ from the thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people already vomiting AI art into the internet. it's a torrent of mediocrity which no AI artist will be able to escape.

AI should only really be used for grunt work like making backgrounds.

Anyways, it's not about getting lucky, talent will always be noticed. However, you do need talent. Most visual novels are sub-par stories that insert porn to make it 'interesting'. The market for real games is quite open, but again, that requires some actual skill in making games.

It's definitely a big challenge, but I've been trying to make it work and so far the responses have been very positive.

I usually have to manually edit images to make them presentable and do small fixes. Plus I make the UI entirely from scratch. But it's more than worth doing, in my opinion. The largest challenge is making characters with the same facial features in different situations.

AI picture generation is an insanely quickly growing technology - I have faith that eventually we'll get to a point where knowledgeable people will be able to make images that are indistinguishable from human-made art. And in thousands of different artstyles, too.

For me, someone who's strengths are writing and UX design, easily accessible images (through stable diffusion) opened the door to game development that would have remained closed forever otherwise.

Honestly, I think it's worth start creating pictures with this technology and learn (that's what I'm doing), this stuff is growing too fast and if you are into it, you'll have an advantage once it gets to the point where all the actual flaws are fixed, and it will happen.

If you are a total noob on this like me, It's a good idea to start a project doing something as a mean to learn, but start it expecting to get some kind of money, it's probably a waste of time and you'll burnout badly and fast.

I would use the AI art as a placeholder and be transparent about it. Then if it gets popular enough hire an artist.
