It depends. If I want to support very many games I'd go lower, if I want to support a small amount of games, then I can go higher. I am not a donkey that can shit goldcoins, but when I can afford it and believe the developer is worth it, then I happily support them, since it makes sense to me to do so, then.

Used to be around 20 per month (but no more that 5 per game). Now it's 0, because I got completely disappointed in everyone. The milking capabilities of such support methods are just ridiculous and I see more excuses than patch notes these days, at least from the people I used to support.
If I'm paying monthly, I want monthly updates. And not just bugfixes. Content. If I don't get it, I don't want to be paying for thin air. There are no eroge developers that have earned this amount of goodwill.

The system needs to change. AT LEAST to the level of Steam's Early Access (which I also hate, but for different reasons). At least there you pay once for the lifetime access to the game, and it won't get ridiculous like 200, 300$ and more for the unfinished product with irregular updates that may not even get finished.

I used to support several different projects on Patreon until they changed how transactions are processed - they stopped taking pre-paid cc's. Prior to that I was one of those people who would support at least the middle tiers but for some devs I had no problem supporting $20+/mo. It all depends on the quality of content, but it's all about personal opinion. Several projects out there have massive support but just aren't interesting to me (Timestamps, Melody, etc) and I know that half the projects I supported heavily didn't at the time have widespread appeal (Holiday Island, PornEmpire, etc).

If Patreon ever goes back to accepting pre-paid cc's I'll be back to heavily supporting several developers.

So much yes. I donate to a few but I have noticed that I have gotten extremely jaded about "Developers". To many didn't finish, screwed it up, or totally deviated from the story I originally donated for. So many Dev's take money every month rather than a per release cycle and yet release half ass updates or just come up with excuses for why there is no update.

IMO if you start accepting money for a game than you have a commitment to the people that support you. "You're supporting the artist not paying for content" blah, blah, blah STFU! No I'm giving him my hard earned money so he produces the game I invested in so I can see a story/play a game all the way to the end. If I give him money monthly than I expect a return on my investment, it's not me donating to charity for a feel good warm gooey feeling. To be fair, I'm sure the Developers are just as Jaded with us (the supporters). They all release updates after they get their money. Most of them only release once a month, after they get their check. They know that if they release before hand that someone would take the game and cancel their pledge. Goes both ways.

When I sign up for a Patreon, it's usually long-term, so I tend to go for the lower tier ones. $10 or more a month can add up over a year, and it's probably unlikely that a project will seem worth $120 in hindsight (though I may have paid that much in total for some anyhow). Also, if a project runs 3-4+ months between updates, I'm probably only going to sign up if they have <5$ options. Projects with a minimum of 5$ but can't promise an update every month make me salty.

Here are some cold hard facts about adult game developers.

- We're all extremely talented writers, directors, animators, coders and all-purpose 3D artists with years of experience. Any perceived disappointments are due to us being lazy. "We're hobbyists learning and doing this stuff for the first time" is just an excuse we made up. We laugh about this together, at your expense, on our weekly Friday night pub crawls.

- We claim to work on these games 20-60 hours a week but in reality, all work is outsourced to some 3rd world country for pennies on the dollar. Why do you think there's so much Engrish? I can't be arsed into proofreading, that's beneath me.

- We have very deep connections in all fabrics of society. Somehow the 99% of us making under $1k a month, (most under $500), is very deceiving. In reality, our deep connections allow us to get a 95% discount on all goods and services. My mortgage is only $80 a month. Jealous much? Once you hit $1k a month, you can milk it indefinitely. I used to feel really guilty about this. I even spent the first week crying myself to sleep on my yacht.

Jokes aside, just like anything in this world, you have those who work hard and those who take advantage. Some people will only pirate and never donate a single dollar in their life, while some others are handing out $100 a month. Some devs work so much that they sleep on the floors of their office and have been practicing social distancing before it was cool, others put out 50 renders and call it an update. A very few make $5k+ a month, many struggle to even hit $1k a year. This "dev" shit has a very low barrier of entry. That's why you have thousands of games. However, to make a good game takes a lot of work and experience.

As far as donations go, I'll repeat what I always say. If you really enjoyed the game and have a few bucks to spare, by all means, toss them in our direction as it will be greatly appreciated. If you enjoyed it but money is tight, please continue enjoying the game but hold on to your money. If you hand out money and think it's anything more than a donation, you're guaranteed to be disappointed.

When I support a Game I support the Patreon for a few month with 5$/Month until I feel I paid off the Game (10-30$). In times where you can get 100hrs AAA-Games for that price it feels kinda crazy to pay more than that to a few hour VN.

Which is why so many of us, supporters, are jaded.

Remind me to give you a call next time I need to borrow money. I'm kidding. I support artists because they are good and have created a game I want to see finished. If I donate once that's a tip for a job well done however if I'm giving something monthly I expect something back. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong but that's how I see it. Guess I'm just going to be disappointed then and you and I will have to agree to disagree.

Depends on my tight budget, sometimes I support multiple developers, sometimes only two or three and unfortunately sometimes I can afford only one hardly. So when my budget gets tighter I try to support devs in turn every month, one month dev a, other month dev b, etc. Never go over 5 bucks pledge level except for very rare one time occasions.

As a result of above I choose the devs I'll support very carefully and mostly try to support low earner devs. I support big earners only if I'm a big fan of their game and it will be mostly one time pledges if my budget is good enough for that month. I really would like to support dozens of my favourite devs regularly, but...

Never supported scammer or obvious milker devs and stopped/paused any of my pledges at the first sign of suspicious inactivity, lazyness, etc. One time I gave the benefit of doubt for a dev and thankfully he was not lying and finished his work.

My elimination process for choosing the devs:

- Only support the hard working ones who try to update regularly
- the ones who are honest and sincere
- the ones who keep their promises
- Only support devs with non greedy and logical pledge levels, patreon rewards
- Monitor the dev's process for a while then decide
- Never support assholes, liars...

Good luck to all hard working honest devs.

What's worst is after that you usually lose access to the product, unlike with normal games and payment methods, including early access. The moment you stop paying, even if you've payed 60$ or more, you essentially lose the game. Which is part of the reason why this whole system is so predatory.

You overvalues time and compares the price of discounted AAA games with a niche product.

Only buying mainstream is why films are nothing but reboots, superheroes and lower writing quality so its easier to translate for the foreign market. Never mind sex games, attractive females won't exist in games unless you support non-mainstream

Still working out my best way to support favourite devs as the budget is tight. My preference atm is to buy games on steam, a one-off payment is easier and completed works will get my support first. I also like to support the relationship between good dedicated devs and steam, I hope they can make a fan base and income there as well. Can think of many who would deserve it.

After collecting the games of devs I want to support there, I will look at patreon. Might do some higher tier, short term subs rather than trying to drip feed a whole bunch of devs for months on end though.

The cheapest tier that gives me early access and is also $10 or less. Anything more than $10 is not worth it imo. Especially for me since I have never joined a developer's Discord and I'm not interested in any of the other usual perks like monthly render requests or stuff like that. As it stands my Patreon pledges average around $5.

I'm also setting myself a limit of $50/month for all Pledges combined. Currently sitting at $35/month I think.
