Here are some images from the games 'Duality' and 'Summer Heat'.
They both have their own styles, but they are both very good in terms of lighting.
They manage to keep an overall bright tone without drowning out the shadows or the surroundings.
One might feel they just use a big emissive panel for that (which the soft shadows will suggest) but they also manage to keep the surroundings free from being overlit even in the indoor settings.
Any thoughts?

Why not ask the authors. I don't understand the question, some regular simple lighting. Probably used a plugin that hides planes off-camera. So the light can penetrate through walls and ceiling. Possibly "fill light" from the camera to reduce shadow depth. Probably just a lot of openings for ambient light to penetrate.

HDRI card as the main light through the window + not strong fill light from the ceiling, as it is usual in rooms + light from the ceiling behind the door, as it is usual in life. You can see the part of the lamp on the ceiling that doesn't work now. But it does work in the first shot.

This is a test render with the only light coming from the window. I love that kind of light.
