Hey Guys. I'm totally new in this forum and playing this games. I'm not english native language so sorry for my grammar or mistakes.

I want to support the dev of a game but I'm afraid to do. I don't know how it's work. What payment methods can I use, is there any risk involved, and can I stop supporting it whenever I want? As you can see I have a lot of questions and I appreciate the comments of people that are supporting games and have experience with this.

Well, it all depends on the platform.
Do they accept Patreon? Subscribestar?
Most Devs normally have one of these set up so you can subscribe by a set amount each month. These platforms normally accept debit and credit cards, but you really need to see what the Dev supports.

This Dev has Patreon.

I'm afraid to send my credit card details. Have you had any problems in this regard? Is Paypal more safe? How can I unsubscribe after a few months if I decide to stop supporting? Is easy to do that?

Paypal = stay away from using Paypal they just got breached in January 20, 2023

it doesn't matter what platform that you use there will always a risk to use them

there are some site that allow you to setup a virtual credit cards to use to keep your original card info safe until that site get breached

if you want to be safer online I would suggest that you go buy a couple Yubico YubiKey 5 NFC - Two Factor Authentication

Nothing is safe. Everything is a calculated risk.

As for credit card info
You are more likely to get your info stolen and then used illegally after you buy something in person than online. In fact, just like with a good number of crimes - you are more likely to be taken advantage of by someone you know than someone you don't.
Paypal had a data breach of 35,000 records January 2023.
Patreon had a data breach of 2.3 million records October 2015.
Banks get breached, such as Bank of America at 4 million records and Latitude Financial at 14 million records March 2023.
With online it is a mass breach and the likelihood your data will be selected from so many records and used for nefarious purposes are similar to "winning the lottery" or "struck by lightning."
Just make sure the sites you are doing business with are secure and that your credit/debit card has appropriate fraud detection and protection and rectification.
You can't live in fear. Just use common sense.

As for unsubscribing on Patreon, it's six simple steps:

Nothing is secure, and everything is secure at the same time.
It all depends on how you manage your things.
Using payment methods in general is secure. If your concern is the developer having access to your personal data, the developer will never have access to your personal data. ( If you are using patreon, subscribe for example )
For recurring payments to be allowed, you need to keep your payment method saved on platforms such as Patreon, sign up, or any other. All of them are subject to data leaks, but I wouldn't dwell on that.
You can prevent yourself in various ways.
  • Keep a close eye on all your bank transactions.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your main accounts.
  • Sign up on leak monitoring tools like Firefox Monitor
In general, it is safe to support developers on major platforms.
