In my opinion the 4 most essential parts for creating an adult game are-

1. Story: The base that propels the entire narrative of the game.It can be a simple story like the everyday life of a common man or something grand involving war, aliens ,fantasy, parallel world, time travel secret society trying to take over the earth etc.

2. Gameplay: This includes everything from game engine to type of storytelling(VN/Sandbox).In short all the technical aspects.

3. Characters: Every story needs its characters. Will the characters unique personality be used to compliment a story or the characters would simply be a set piece to move along the narrative?

4. Artwork/Animation: As a visual medium to enjoy erotic situation, how much emphasis would you like place on this aspect?

BONUS:
Specific fetishes: Do your heart fancy some special fetishes?

For me,out of 100%,I would like a game with emphasis on-
Artwork/Animation=40%
Characters=30%
Gameplay=20%
story=10%;Don't care for fetishes.

For me the story and characters belong together. A good story won't work with bad written characters and vice versa. A good story is also very important to me, but not the way you might think. Even if it's just a basic story or something hilarious, if it's well written, I'm in. If it's not, I'm out.
Artwork and animation is somewhat of a mixed thing for me. I don't need hyper realistic models or scenes, but I always look at the details. If a dev has no sense for details, then the scenes and/or animation will look bad, no matter how good the models look.
Gameplay is unimportant to me as long as it's not boring.
I don't need fetishes to like a game, but it's nice to have some.
So, long story short:
Story/Characters: 40%
Artwork/Animation: 40%
Gameplay: 10%
Fetisches: 10%

Story: I second that it's not a good idea to separate characters and story, those two and world-building are closely connected, so I would just add up 35% of the total.

Art: it's not all that important, but it's nice to see good renders/drawings and a pleasant UI, so 15%.

Gameplay: that a big one, good game design and interesting mechanics in a robust engine are important, 25%.

Fetishes: I have very specific tastes, that rarely get satisfied, so it's a big deal when I find one that does, 25%.

That's all a purely academical analysis, you can't make recipes for greatness. In fact, looking at my game list I would say most of the games are far from perfect and rarely get high marks in aspects, they do excel in one area and that's enough to keep my interest. For example, The DeLuca family has a great story, setting and characters (except the MC) and decent enough in the other aspects except for the fetish score that is zero, but because it excels in one area it keeps me coming back.

90% characters and story.
10% gameplay.

I don't care about art, my favourite game doesn't have any just text for sex scenes. I also quite enjoy text based games.

Simply put, I can get porn anywhere. I pick games specifically for the story. If a game doesn't have a story and characters that grab me I delete it.

I can tolerate a semi decent story if the characters amaze me.

Why play games then? You can get many erotic novels with good stories and characters. You can also let your imagination run wild while reading a novel which are not restricted by game mechanics.

100% Story, Character-Relationships and a Choices.

0% Gameplay, if I want Gameplay I play a real Game. Games that try to put some form of Gameplay into it always are terrible and it always ends up being some super simple Minigame.

My dream adult game is not even a porn game. Just very exciting story, not focused around porn, with sex just as...additional feature (but a lot of it). Like "Game of Thrones" with a lot of sex.
But we talking about games. And games gives you freedom of choice. While playing games, unlike books, I can actually be main character (book is someones adventures - game is my history).

For example, my favourite adult game of all time is "A Dance with Rogues".
"Dragon Age Origins" and "The Witcher" trilogy is also a good example, or "The Coceter Chronicles"
(as well as other games in my signature below)

I'm of your opinion, precisely for that, I'm making my game in that way.

Usually games where the goal is to fuck (there's a lot of them... Or you cannot even know what the story of the game is, you only know your character is there and he's horny). are not very interesting to me. (Nothing bad with people who likes that).

But I like games with a plot different from sex, but that has sex in to it. Like a Mass effect or Dragon Age Origins, just without censure, and replacing boring filler (sidequest...) with romance/sex pursuit.

Not always the case, but a good generalization at this stage. I spent a bit of time thinking and the only game that stands on par with normal games as far as gameplay goes is The Last Soveriegn. Maybe Subverse will be the next.

How would you construct you adult GAME.....GAME....
If you are only interested in the Adult part, why don't you just go to Pornhub or read some comics ???
God...:cautious:

For me..
My perfect/ideal adult game would be.
The Witcher 3 with absolute 100% freedom to do whatever you want to do.... Everything that my sick mind can think of.
Do i want to enjoy a good story, no problem
Do i want to corrupt an entire village into being my personal slaves... No problem.
Do i want to create a harem with a couple Succubi and other sexy monster.. No problem
And much...much more.

But we are still many years away from something like that, so right now my ideal adult game are games like Peasant Quest...
Good RPGM games with old school turn-based combat, solid characters and a fun story.

Not sure if your just wanting to talk about Games in specific, disregarding pure visual novels (kinetic and/or choice)?

In general, there are so many combinations of how Erotic/Adult Games and Visual Novels are typically put together... If I had to list my personal preferences, I couldn't really break it down into percentages, as that is far too specific...

But here are the main things I typically look for in any game and/or visual novel in this market:

1 - Story: I always prefer a well told story, to include good dialogue/monologue, unique plots that make sense and flow well, well developed character interactions that don't go too far over the top, with a setting that isn't too crazy or fantastical (to the point of being way over the top and/or completely far fetched)… I'm probably a little more forgiving when it comes to parody focused VN/Games as long as I think it's actually funny and creatively witty...

2 - Protagonist/Characters: The protagonist (male or female) needs to be someone I feel I can get behind, adding to the immersion of the story elements, who's personality isn't stuck in one mode only (never changing) as the story progresses... Characters with unique and distinctive personalities that don't go too far over the top or play into overused stereotypes... Characters who's personalities adapt and change as necessary, depending on how the story develops, as well as interactions with other characters to include the protagonist (in order to avoid becoming stale and never changing because real people are dynamic and subject to changes based on experiences and the environment around them)… It's proper character development over the length of a story, that is probably one of the hardest things for a developer to do well... Most of the time, there is this tendency for most characters, in these things, to stick to one or a few character personality traits that never change or alter in any way as the story progresses, and in many cases they include way over the top and/or stereotyped personality traits...

3 - Game Play Mechanics: I usually prefer a visual novel with choices that actually mean something, regardless if it's just a momentary change due to a choice or a long term change.... If you are going to offer up choices at all, then let them have meaning... And I really do NOT like Choice Traps, that are meant to force a player/reader down a specific path preferred by the developer... To me, and many other folks, Choice Traps leading to Dead Ends/Game Over and so on, feel like player/reader punishment... If you don't want the player/reader to make a certain choice, then don't offer it... Nothing feels like a complete waste of my time, then having a choice presented that ends the game early... When I'm playing/reading a VN/Game, I actually will try varying choices now and then, just to see what happens...

There are other game play mechanics I don't mind, if they are not annoying, highly repetitive, and/or tedious...

You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

4 - Visuals: For me visuals are not as important, depending on the game... That being said, I do get annoyed seeing the same backdrops and certain character models, used over and over again from one VN/Game to another... I prefer some originality and creative design on the part of the developers visuals (significant model and background changes if using stock ones)... I don't usually care if they are 3D, 2D, hand drawn, or stick figures... That being said, I really do NOT like RPG Maker games for varying reasons (from the old Nintendo style visuals to the game play mechanics to etc)… Also, I don't like character models that are out of proportion or over the top (such as penis's larger then they should be for the body frame, or overly sized breasts that are both impractical and/or defy gravity and/or don't fit their body frame, same goes for overly sized butts with anorexic hour glass waists that together don't really exist in nature, and the list goes on)… I don't mind well done animations, they don't necessarily need to be fluid, as long as they are not robotic looking... Animations are never a requirement for me, even during sexual encounters... It's when sexual encounters are super fast slam-bam thank you ma'am, and it's over in a few space bar hits, that I feel disappointed...

5 - Fetishes/Themes: I really only have certain extreme fetishes and themes I prefer to avoid, over having a specific list of ones I prefer... I will not get into a detailed list, as I don't want to give firewood to those few immature individuals that love derailing threads (you can probably guess what some of those are) when someone "dares" to criticize certain fetishes/themes... I'm fairly open minded about many fetishes and themes, but I do have a moral compass that tells me when something is going too far and/or involves something I don't believe should be used (ever)… Regardless if fiction or non-fiction...

In the long run, it's a complex market, and I have complex preferences (only some of which I touched on)... I've tried all sorts of these Adult/Erotic Games and Visual Novels... Each one is individual, even though many like to copy themselves (lack of originality)… But I will always prefer quality on all aspects of any given VN/Game, together as a whole... As to this market, I want to be entertained, with good story and/or game play, along with a mix of erotic/adult content... If I wanted pure porn, there are literally millions of porn vids out there I could go watch...

Story and choices.

I like RPG's a lot. One of my favorites is Planescape Torment, due to all the choices you have as the player and the immersion. If a game just put you on a rail from one rump to bone after the other it's not really that interesting at all. Could just as well watch some flick or whatever.

Grind is not fun, and work badly as a tool to make your game feel longer. Visuals is not the most important for me. The biggest sexual organ you have as a human, is your brain. (why adaptions of books to screenplays is terrible majority of the time, because you already played it out with your imagination).

Problem is though. The more choices you as a player get the more workload on the creator, and more complex the game/story get. What we as players want doesn't always compute very well with what creators able to give us in a given time frame. People will always moan about their branch/path get no content in a update etc. Or time will drag out for a new update as creator try to cover all bases, which in turn will get some fire off about how the creator is just milking it etc.

1. A great story with some branching and meaningful interactivity.
2. Great art--usually great character designs, including skin textures, facial expressions etc with good posing and lighting.
3. Little to no grinding, if there is there should be something entertaining or interesting about it.
4. Something extra--good animations, maybe some voice acting, e.g.
5. intuitive gameplay--I should be able to figure out what to do next.
6. Good characterization, dialogue and narrative.
7. Something that integrates fetishes into gameplay. If there's a harem theme, I want to see the harem in action, not some guy banging 11 women and none of them are even aware of each other or that they're banging the same guy. If there's a mind control theme, I want to see how the MC develops those abilities and figures out the nuances of it, not just some excuse to segue to the next sex scene. If there's an incest theme, I want to see the familial relationship before there's even a hint of sexual tension.
8. No handjobs ever. ;p
9. Depth and length of gameplay. Once you have sex, there should be more to come--costumes, fetishes, group scenes, impregnation, BDSM, whatever.
10. Creativity/quality--show me something new and different. Or do the cliche' stuff way better than it's been done before.

Good post but what is wrong with Handjobs?
1.Nobody over the age of 18 looks at a woman and thinks, "man, I'd love to get a handjob from her!"
2. IRL the only circumstances where a handjob is exciting is if you're a teenager or possibly college age and your gf is giving you one for the first time. By the third time you're already chomping at the bit to go further.
3. In other circumstances it's a stall or a placatory gesture by a woman. Committing her hand is not the same as committing her mouth, vagina or anus.
4. It's literally the least a woman can do to get a guy off, and it happens to be something a man can do for himself already.
5. Its place on the "Stairway to Heaven" has been amply described on the porn game tropes thread. Devs use it to mark one of the first steps up the stairway, and inevitably it's going to be a while before the MC gets past that point.

Circumstances and locations..... as with all forms of sex.

If you are driving down the highway and your gf/wife/partner start give you a handjob, what would you do? Push her away disgruntled?

No. But generally the act is not that exciting as portrayed in games.
