I am curious: if you are a dev, how many people in your life know about your profession?

I am talking about relatives and close friends, or even soulmates.

(I deleted what came next because it was just me blabbering about how unsupportive of me my parents were in my life and I realised it was somewhere between trauma-dumping and useless vent with strangers on a porn related site. Nonetheless, I am still curious about the answers to my question)

I actually am a 22 years old who had the "luck" to have two parents that don't even consider being a "regular" game developer a real job, to the point where they had to blackmail me into not applaying for a university that would allow me to become one, so of course when I finally decided to step into the NSFW VN industry, I had to keep this all a secret. What is your story?
If you're 22 you're an adult, why do they have any say in what you do?

Well I don't want to bore you with the story of my life, so I will give you the short version: I have no other choice.
I have two younger siblings and I basically spent the last 15 years parenting them instead of our own parents. During that time, I didn't have time to harvest money with part time jobs or learn valuable skills that would allow me to earn much money online (I am studying renn'Py at the same time as I am making my game)

Your short version doesn't support your first statement about your parents. If they didn't parent the family, it doesn't make sense that you owe them deference by hiding your intent to enter game development - mainstream or adult.

Anyway, the question from Icarus Media was rhetorical. More for you to ponder for yourself than to give a response here.

That said, I would recommend investing time into creative writing more than learning Ren'Py. The story-telling aspect of game development is a skill far too many developers lack and requires more practice and revision than coding does.

well I just know they would get in my way if they found out about it. Just because they didn't do their job as parents doesn't mean they do not feel entitled to their authority as parents and that they would not find way to act as obstacles to my projects. If I refuse to study what they want me to study, I am out of the house, and I live in a country where young people are rarely employed and often underpaid. And I guess that deep down, I am not "finally free" from their control as I convinced myself to be.

About your suggestion, I am well aware that creating a VN is about more than just coding and I am studying proper writing thanks to youtube videos and other stuff

tho in all honesty, I get what you meant, Icarus was probably calling me out and telling me to take my life into my own hands. That is what I am trying to do

Especially with Ren'Py, unless he want to make something really advanced with it.
Yet, even in that case it will globally be a one time situation ; he will struggle a bit to write the base code for his game mechanism, but after this there's no real need for advanced coding. This while the writing skills will be needed from starts to stop.

As for the rest, there's alas parents that are like that. And OP personal situation make it impossible, for now, to goes against them whatever how old he is and how hard he want it. But in the same time, 22yo is young, very young.

I am going to follow yours and the others more expert developers suggestions and not understimate the importance of proper writing, thank you for using your time to warn me about this.

And I also appreciate your words about my situation with my parents, just as much as I appreciate the other two being harsh but fair in telling me I should start to take these kind of matters into my own hands

Three of my close programming buddies and a graphic designer knows what I do. I even talked to them to some length about the kinks I'm delving into in my VN. My family are prudes and though, I don't think I would feel ashamed if any of them knew what I was doing, it's just more headache to tell them than it is to keep it on the down low. When it comes to strangers, I just tell them I make adult visual novels on the side, whether they know what that means is up to them. If they ask I tell them the truth, otherwise its just a garbled mess of words they either don't know or don't care to know.

I see. I hope that one day I will get to talk as freely about this as you

All it takes is telling that first person the truth, then you realize something profound: No one has time in their life to worry about what you do for fun or for a living. Well, if they do then they need to get a life :ROFLMAO:
