Note: this is mostly for pre-remaster version, but still applies for most part to the updated one.
So...I had played it for several (6-8) hours on end, and I felt like...one - bored, due heavy focus on reading rather than, you know, playing the game, two, unconvincing story that makes me unsympathetic to any side, just to be done with, three, pathetic gameplay that is basically do stuff, talk then fight weak monsters and maybe a medium boss that may or may not kill you depending on how prepared you are, mostly spam skills that ensure their quick death or to ensure you'll outlast them, four, sex parts only starts for your character if you ever, lose once, which makes the stuff about the player character hating sex rather redundant once that happens. Basically failure is impossible unless YOU do. In fact, it feels more of a visual novel turned into a game with the amount of reading and stuff you do just to read more as opposed to playing the game. It would be more acceptable in such case, as it doesn't feel like a game for most part than a visual novel.
So, people say the story in this game is beautiful, but lemme break it down: there's the standard "good" path, where you do your proper job as a hunter to exterminate monsters and eventually, spoiler, killing your partner because she's absorbing both good and evil power, "neutral" path, where you ally with the rebels to make stuff even, and "evil" path, where you abandon all sorts of morals to become a evil god that even your partner only hopes to be. And that's basic as it gets - the good path is also the only one where sex can be entirely avoided, and just like the predecessor game with similar end, you can give your virginity to a male ally or just move as friends. So after condensing the basics of it, it's...predictable, characters have no proper chemistry, the serious scenes cannot be taken as good they are trying to be, and just idiotic at certain points.
The soundtrack in this is just generic epic battle ones, with 1 song being in Russian because that sounds badass but I didn't found it good either because of where it(and others)plays and how everything feels in general.
The most annoying part of this game however, is the fact you have to do VERY specific things if you want to get something more specialized than standard good ending if you do it right, or what you want - which means you have to resort to guides if you don't want to waste time experimenting and trying to guess what works and what doesn't. That's the reason why I think any review that tries to make it as if it's a good thing just a weak attempt at defending bad design. It's one thing if a game does enough to suggest what you should do, but not when you have to completely resort to them.
The translation is mostly fine, but again, its Americanized judging by dialogue, lots of non-sexual swearing and feel that they were saying something else, certain untranslated parts, and other things that make it quite not good.
It looks pretty, it looks polished, it looks as it is a badass anime, but real deep down is a boring, long story with no proper structure, unsatisfying gameplay, predictable endings, and no suspense or shock coming from all of it. I don't agree with pure low ratings but I also don't agree with pure perfection ones either because that heavily skews the truth, and also doesn't teach really meaningful to folk that can think.
