Hey guys so im sure this is a discussion that has been had 4034934903 times aha but i have just gotten into DAZ 3D and making 3D Art/Characters/Graphics whatever we wanna call it and im really intrigued by it so much i want to improve my skills in both just making still images and also animations, so basically i was wondering if i could ask for any tips or just anything to help me out. also a big question i want to ask should i invest in GEN 8/8.1 Or just go to GEN 9 ive seen alot of different opinions on reddit but for me i feel the opinions on a place like this will do me better.

ok second major question, after i learn how to make my characters and genuinely get good at it i would probs love to make a game or attempt to make a game, the only thing i know nothing about coding, atleast with the art i do have some prior knowledge with editing and graphic design but with coding nothing, whats the approach to learn that i was thinking it would just be a renpy game so any tips on getting started with that. also do i need to buy the daz 3d creative licensees for each item if i wanna make a renpy game?

but yea thats about it i would just love some tips and build a gameplan on how to start all of this cause it seems alot but im dedicated on learning. so anything would be much appreciated

oh on the assets page am i allowed to use those assets or do i still gotta buy em??

ive been using DAZ for a few hours and the pictures below are what i have been able to come up with so far as a total beginner

There are far better artists than me you could have tagged :p

First, I'll answer the assets question. You should buy them, as once you publish a game, you don't want to get dinged for pirating content.

That said, this is a pirate forum and the chances of anyone questioning whether you own an asset are slim to none...

Personally, if you're just starting out, I'd go with genesis 8 characters. There's an absolutely huge library of content for them, and they're the easiest to work with both posing wise and hardware wise. G9 has better textures, but they're not worth it for a beginner considering the extra hardware requirements they can need.

As for tips, all I can really say is:

1. Don't use stock characters, mix them up with sliders to make them unique
2. Don't use pre-set expressions, apply them with sliders, never go 100% as they always look awful.
3. Don't use pre-poses where the character is standing as if they're wearing high heels, when they're not wearing high heels.
4. Lighting! Lighting, lighting, lighting! This is the most important thing to learn and what you should start with!

Hey thanks and yea look a game won’t be happening for a long time for now it’s just going to be getting better and more comfortable with making the art I feel I’ve made an alright start,

ah I did gen 9 as I thought it might be future proofing it but honestly I like the look of em so I’m happy with my choice,

yea now that I’ve made my choice gonna work on making a main character now

but I’m excited for the journey

If I may ask haven’t played your game but do you include animations if so is it actual animations or more just export one photo then do the next post and render it etc

thanks so much for answering

Animations from my knowledge of playing are 2-5 second loops, optimize them by using a .mov (Apple Prores) codec or GIF format so the player doesn't have a half second black screen for it to load - save yourself effort by doing most of the gearing up of the scene with just stills - A unique feature I saw in Shattered Minds was the ability to change camera angles, which just meant they exported 2-3 different angles and synced them in a parallel fashion on the node map.

yea i feel ive seen some do it where its a 2-5 second loop or some do it with editing frames together so it will be like 1 then idk sometimes a flash on the screen then the next frame i think thats old school tho

i think in the big 2025 probs have to do full animations for like a handjob or blowjob

One of my biggest irks at the moment is games being lazy with the cumshots, really prefer when it's fully animated liquid rather than a flash and suddenly its on them

thats fair enough not even sure ive seen one where someone has managed to do it where its a cumshot and the liquid goes on the girl all in one animation

but yea so far ive gotten good at making the pictures but havent gotten into the animation side of it that seems real hard aha

Check out Treasure of Nadia, early versions they used 2D alpha assets in 3D space and then used masking for interaction with licking etc, later in the game they start using translucent liquid materials and physics for it, in Being a dik they use pretty opaque 3D spherical objects

I guess the best recommendation I can give you based on experience is... sure, do get better before starting your game, but don't wait too long. My original goal has always been making games but I had a lot of trouble and lost a bit of money trying to find an artist, so I started learning to draw... I felt it was taking too long and wasn't really improving much, probably not my strong suit... then I learned about Daz. It fit like a glove. Figured I'd make my game with it when I felt I was good enough. That was... almost 8 years ago. I pretty much have been working as an artist myself instead of a game dev.
I actually had sort of a life realization last week, dropped what I was working on, started planning my damn game.
So yeah, don't be me. :HideThePain:

Edit: Also, about not using stock characters, I don't think that's a hard rule. It is recommended because your characters will be unique but, I mean, if you find a character you absolutely love and think it fits perfectly for a character in your game, don't feel like you have to tweak it "just because". If games like Being a DIK can have stock character as a main character, in fact, probably as THE face of the game, you can too. If you need to tweak a character, do it because you want to.

Here's something you can bookmark.

And this section, like morphnet linked, is your friend, but now with Daz selected. This is for Blender.

yea thanks i guess i have been fully focused on getting a hang of the daz side of things i hadnt even given the actual game and learning like RenPy a single thought yet i just wanted to get a hand of the artistic side of things working first, which for just like idk 2 weeks now i feel ive made good progress, still a long long way to go but i am having fun with it which i guess is a main point

i feel ive done decent with lighting and figured out alot of basics, now im just learning positioning and also working with 2 models and putting them together without it looking *wonky* ahah

but thanks
