Hello there fellow AVN - VN enjoyer!

I present you, Project Dreadsteel (Or at least just a preview of what it will be...) It's a VN with planned Turn Based Combat gameplay.

I've been working on for quite some time... 6 Months to be exact (Not including planning...)! Mainly mechanics like the "Schedule System" and a "RPG" system with passive stat increases.


We now have a discord!





The game is lighthearted at moments, but can get quite dark, specially in some backstories and combat.
It does have options to cut some content (gore, profanity filter, r-patch). Which can be enabled or disabled in the preferences menu.

I do have an ending planned, 3 main routes and different outcomes.
There will be 6 Chapters, 8 including prologue and epilogue.
The game will also be focused on characters, for now all characters have planned backstories.

There will be NO NETORARE.
Harem and Lesbian is optional. So as romance.

The main theme is "Finding a purpouse", "Hope in grim times", "Humanity", the toll of war and misunderstandings.

Summary:
A couple of years after your mother's demise, you barely got by each day.
Emotionally crushed and barely earning a living with your actual job, you get an invitation to KRI (Kyoto Research Institute)
A strange proposition, but it's better than nothing...
Little you know it will uncover a whole new world, after all you wanted to meet new faces.
That world... It will test your very morals and your humanity. Will you succumb to despair or bloodlust? Or will you succeed and perhaps change the world?

Sypnosis:
In the year 2062, 24 years after the 3rd World War that obliterated most of humanity.
Only a handful of locations remain mostly intact, yet most countries are on the brink of collapse.
The fragile peace that keeps the world together is fading, and war is on the horizon once again.

Recently, certain humans have unlocked a new potential called "Ether", which allow them to go beyond what a normal human is capable of.
Mystery surrounds this new phenomenon. To study it further a squadron of "Ether-Users" was assembled in Kyoto, designation "Dreadsteel".
Japan being pioneer in the Ether looks to bolster its own defense in the coming storm...

I would love to hear your feedback and questions, I'm actively developing the game in my breaks, however I do have things to do in real-life sooooo... I can work mostly at midnight. If things go well I might fully dedicate myself to bring this story to life. I have a strong passion for this project, I always wanted to be a writter myself :D, heck I also have future projects that I can make! "Of course after finishing this one."

Don't mind the excessive edits... I forgot to put images or things.

First of all thank you! I wanted to make a game that is fun and impactful. But also optionally with romance and quite spicy too...

Oh, Koko Hekmatyar? It's the first time I saw her, I'm surprised of the similarities o_O.
Initially I based Ryabchik as Albino with inspirations taken from Esdeath and Olivier Armstrong.
A true femme fatale, she is still a girl at her core though.

Thanks for your feedback! I tried experimenting with shading techniques from KK Pixiv using Vanilla Plus.

Loving the direction that your AVNs storyline is headed. Sounds quite intriguing with the whole Aether superpower and what the full extent of this power would entail for certain users.

Quite a colourful cast of characters as well.

Ryabchik in particular looks very intriguing to me. Would love to learn more about her backstory and what she would look like wearing different types of sexy outfits ;) :devilish:

^ A status system would be pretty neat to see implemented. Would be kinda tough to code in I would imagine :unsure:

But getting a bird's eye view of active status effects/defects would be neat to see implemented. Maybe like implementing different facial expressions on the character selection screen that would indicate what the user is inflicted with.

Thank you for your feedback! The Ether as a concept is related to "Willpower" hence why "Will" is going to be an important stat, in a nutshell as long as an User believes it's possible or puts strong emotions into it, he can do it. As long as they have a strong attunement.

The characters I tried my best to make them unique and standout from each other, I tried taking references from real people too so they look a little closely to their ethnic! It took time to think how to make them, Nova for example was the first concept a little more than a year ago, she looked, quite different...

As for Ryabchik? She does have an intriguing backstory that made her into who she is. Yes, I do have plans for sexy outfits :sneaky:, casual outfits and even if all goes well "cosplay" outfits which are also benefitial! Along with their own stories.However I'm curious to hear what sexy outfit you would recommend, I was thinking a lingerie of sorts, but maybe your idea would be perfect!

I already have the Trait system implemented so it's doable! They are the same in mechanics only that STATUS have a "Time" condition and depend more on certain conditions. Which I would have to look unto implementing it along the period and day system.

I might make Status moddeable too, I do have a .json system for Traits.

But I do have a system based on Emotional STATS up and running!

Based on conditions like MOOD, ANGER and DREAD if they reach certain values they switch to another sprite.

That's a great idea! Implementing Statuses for the screens! I have some statuses like "broken" and "bloodlust" that would work well there.

I also wanted to implement a dynamic expression system. I did actually manage to streamline sprite expressions when certain characters talk using Ren'Py Auto Highlight so it can be possible. I would have to make each expression have certain values and depending on mood or statuses, add or override values... Would be more immersive, but it would have to be disabled on certain moments.

Btw, there are about 40 expressions in the portrait system per character including outfits I tried making it as lightweight as possible, so each outfit weights around 600kb with the expressions, not including sprites yet. It's not hard after setting it up, but time consuming if I make it custom for each character, unless Timeline decides to flip me the bird lol. Which means eating the keyframes or skipping a couple of frames while recording ._.

I mostly almost finished the renders for Prologue Part 1/2 but I ran into a dilema...

As the poll closes, I decided to go Hybrid, I made a sprite framework for ease of use so now all's left is to test it.

I'm working on the maps progress is going well, I'm always trying to refine characters too.

Alas to celebrate the pool opening, some of our girls put on their bikinis! "This is a bunker by the way full of amenities."

The boys? Well Janus took the picture... Amir was just sitting there admiring Bekir, "I'm still not sure about the lovers though! I can include both or just 1! That is for the next poll! I do have an idea for their backstory."

Thanks a lot, fellow dev! I hope not, I'm more afraid of not meeting expectations or disappointing, so far I love the development process!

But I'm anxious about releasing it since I'm mostly socially awkward and I don't know how to PR or advertise yet.

Oh well, I will learn as I go, and with the help of the community and you folks the game will come to life!

Seems I can't delete the poll... So it will be harder to do this question.

I thought of a combat system in the future and I kinda sort it out now how it would work, but the whole coding process is extensive. So I have a few options!

1. Story focus "Focus on story rather than combat, the game still kinda depends on combat as a deeper story-telling mechanic." This doesn't mean it won't work without it, just that it will have a lesser impact and the STAT system will be mostly for story telling...

2. JRPG or Turn RPG "Like the classic Final Fantasy type of games, with a wave system." Can still eventually adapt to option 3 (Medium workload)

3. Tactical RPG "Like X-Com, SRW, FFTactics" the original vision I had for Project Dreadsteel (Heavy workload), now this needs (Tile maps, AI Movement, LoS Scripts, AoE Scripts, sprite system) I can do it, but it will most likely delay updates more.

Both combat systems will also use a "Hangar System" I already have in mind what I want to achieve in it.

While indeed is all very complex, this will be mostly a 1 time thing as most of the framework that was made, then mostly full focus on story.

Otherwise I can fully focus on story and then, when I have enough experience and funds, focus on combat.

Dev-Log #1
While I do have a LONG personal log in my computer, there is the existence of spoilers in there... Without further a do! Before.
  • Character System DONE!
  • Schedule/Calendar System DONE! (Not fully tested)
  • Lots of things here... In a nutshell, this was 10 months ago.
As of these months.
  • Finished Rhona's Sprites.
  • Finished most of the Prologue 1/2's static Renders (85%)
  • Prologue Sprites (60%)
  • Maps (60%) I thank the ether-Resarcher Team for helping me with the Living Quarters!
  • GUI progress and heavy tweaks have been made during this month! Thanks a lot Inspired! (60%)
  • Prologue 1/2 (90%)
  • Prologue 2/2 (10%)
Roadmap for Pre-Release
  • Make a MAP System.
  • Revision some renders and the very first scene.
  • Add animations exclusive to R-Version.
  • Finish the GUI ("Bio").
  • Add a "Contacts" option.
  • Prototype "Schedule events". These event's outcomes will depend on your STATS, and are very beneficial either way as a suggestion try looking for every event possible. (For now Nova's Martial Event is planned for Pre-Release.)
  • Add an Inventory system for Infrastructure (Training Rooms), Character Inventory (will make it simple, inventory will also apply to character rooms).
  • Introduce Kiiro Hotaru, Caelus Mildred, Reina Watanabe and Jun Watanabe.
Roadmap for Alpha-Release
  • Introduce Kianga Thabisa, Andrea Villarey, Hana Morimoto, Amir Latif and Bekir Meriem.
  • Finish most of the Schedule Events.
  • Add a "dating" system, and a character interaction system.
  • Finish Prologue.
That concludes the very first Dev-Log. As for pictures, here we go! Some of the scenes aren't ready, but here is a glimpse of the story!

I'm considering switching to Koikatsu Sunshine Sunshine for AssetImport, would take a week to set up though...

Progress has been steady and I've been refining my skills...

As of now I ported to Koikatsu Sunshine, it is. Waaay better. Faster work, AssetImport! And better shading.
