I’ve noticed that more and more Patreon accounts are being deleted or are under review. Can you tell me more about this? Is Patreon cracking down on adult content on its platform?

Patreon isn't cracking down on "adult content", they are enforcing their rules on certain types of kinks / fetishes which have been in place for years now. No one but patreon knows why or how those that have slipped through the cracks are being caught now, it could be from reports or more spot checks.

At the end of the day, only those with banned content are being caught / at risk, everyone else making adult content is safe.

How do they check? Do they play the game? lol.

I have a few ideas and subject that come close to breaking some patreon TOS but none of them actually do. I am worried that they'd strike me down without realizing caring that they don't actually break the TOS.

yes. if they need to to verify that a rule is broken. how else do you think they do it? but patreon act on reports, so you dont know when they will come for you if you break the rules. steam on the other hand plays your game submission before you're allowed to sell it

I just cant imagine someone working at patreon playing adult games just to be like, oops buddy, you fucked up, "step-sibling incest is not allowed" hah.
I have some incestuous romance themes but nothing pornographic for mine. That's why I was thinking if someone played my game and saw that you can "romance" your sibling, that would be enough to say the game breaks TOS without actually verifying there is graphic artwork. It says if it's part of the story then it's an exception so it's just straight up to the presumptive judgement of the reviewer.

If you are concerned, contact patreon and ask them, they can / will review the material and let you know about any changes that need to be made, if any.

it doesnt have to be graphic. patreon's guidelines for sexually gratifying works include written and audio.

if patreon deems that the incest is only part of the story and it is not sexually gratifying, it will be allowed. but forget it if you want it to be sexy and give people a boner.

I agree about the content policiy reasons mentioned by everyone here but I also think that it has to do with recent Visa and Mastercard extra requirements for patreon, such as . And it looks like patreon has become very strict about consent for involved characters (even if they are fictional) in your projects.

There have been massive ban waves on pixiv as well because of visa and mastercard. Other nsfw sites like dlsite also got suspended by these companies. They have been cracking down on nsfw pretty hard past few months. :(

age verification and consent documentation ONLY applies to real people, namely the creators and the real people involved in their 18+ smut. it's not in any way connected to fictional characters, unlike the other content guidelines like no incest etc.

I didn't say age verification and consent document was required for fictional characters, I know it applies to real people but I was talking about how they care about consent for fictional characters just as much. Like for example, take a look at this reddit thread -

The perception of consent - even among fictional characters - has been a part of Patreon's TOS/Community Guidelines for years. You can see this by looking at an April 2019 archive of their guidelines:
We also do not allow other fringe sexual fetish content, such as incest, necrophilia, or fetish content that is hard to distinguish from non-consensual sex. (emphasis mine)

It has been so for years before that, as well. It is the reason why in 2017 that Summertime Saga was told they needed to change their content or be removed. That is why DarkCookie removed the forced sleepsex scene between Anon and Jenny.

This is before the Visa/Mastercard push in recent years.

Creators who wish to use Patreon need to read and understand Patreon's TOS and Community Guidelines. If they have any questions or concerns about their content aligning with Patreon's allowances, they need to reach out to Patreon for clarification and they need to keep every single communication to and from Patreon in an archive to document, document, document.

I know it has always been in their content guideline policy, but recently it feels like they have been doubling down on it for some reason and I thought it could be the visa and mastercard pressure.

There's a semi-plausible theory I saw that the Westy situation scared them a bit. (Westy was an Australian dev who was arrested for making a... rule 7 game)
