disclaimer: i haven't played the other games by this developer, and am aware that this is a spinoff of a main game series with a smattering of references and tie-ins.
pros:
+equipment, battle mechanics, encounter design, and stat growths generally feel polished, consistent, and easy to understand, with some interesting hidden/special gear and abilities
+linearity broken up pretty effectively by occasional forked paths, items to find off-screen, and character interactions requiring different party members being present
+effective, non-grating soundtrack
+game length feels appropriate (doesn't overstay its welcome), and basic xp grinding is mostly painless during the main story (if needed) thanks to optional speed-up in battle and abundance of multi-target damage skills
+surprising amount of optional content, including more h-scenes and difficult battles during the main game and post-game
+feels like the writer (and translator) actually enjoyed writing the script and characters; easy to get attached to some
+being able to choose whether to view any individual h-scene and the added content warnings for some is a nice touch
cons:
-bearing in mind this could be a misunderstanding from not playing the other games: the ending suffers from a frustrating lack of closure and feels like an intentional cliff-hanger/sequel bait. strange to see from a game that's already a spin-off/side-story, especially considering how much figurative and literal world-building happens throughout the story all the way through post-game
-some in-battle skills have no description (e.g., "grants 'x' for 'y' turns," with no description anywhere of what 'x' does, even when using the option for additional information)
-late post-game content, while functional, feels rushed and unfinished
-while it's not at all necessary for the main story: optional ultra difficult battles, which otherwise seem interesting, are made much less desirable by the main post-game stat growth method being an inexcusably torturous grind, whether via battling normally, or by the somehow-even-more-torturous-despite-being-faster resource farming available as part of the bare-bones camp building feature
-with some exceptions, multiple (most?) h-scenes per character either use the exact same art per scene, or nearly the same with very small changes
neutral/personal observations:
-+if you're anything like me, you will still unintentionally flashbang yourself with the main character's butthole at least once, even with the content warnings
-+it's strange how few and far between the "game over" scenes are as a fan of that sort of thing, but it's not worth being upset about because they all use the same art as the companion versions of the same characters
-+i really wish there was a LITTLE bit of sequence breaking possible and some other small touches to make NG+ a little bit more appealing, since the game length and optional challenges make it feel ripe for that sort of thing
-+the two characters you can get that have options to be auto-attacking, uncontrollable berserker types are both hilariously broken when you first get them, which was a fun contrast to them being the most useless archetype in literally every other rpg ever made
