VN - Ren'Py - Intertwined [v0.13] [Nyx]

I´m not handing out 5 stars to every games. There is really a lot of great games theses days! It´s a pity really. If this is really Nyx first game, it´s top shelf! Finding a flaw in this game is stupid, mostly because it´s irrelevant. All that matters in a VN is done expertly here.
Every girl looks different, feals different and has a distinct personality. The MC is a great guy, very funny and has believable relationships with every girl. The story is great and VERY branched out. If you think episode 9 was short, start over and flirt with a different girl and you´ll get a different scene with your girl.
I dont know why you´re still reading this. Stop wasting your time and go play one of the best VNs in existence.

A Good Game Marred by Extremely Questionable Design Choices
    A v0.9 review. Spoilers ahead.

Intertwined is interesting. It's entertaining. The characters are all reasonably compelling and if not quite lifelike, at least lifelike-adjacent. Renders are good, even if the animations feel more like stop motion photography than anything resembling smooth and seamless. It has all the hallmarks of a good game. You want to like it.

But the problems start to surface the more you play. They're small and harmless at first, letting you overlook them, but it becomes bigger and harder to ignore as the game goes on.

The game is fundamentally built around a series of branching paths. But even in a game with so many girls and so many branching paths, choices feel restrictive. Choices in this game boils down to which character(s) you wish to pursue. But even the choices to pursue them are far from obvious. Certain choices that seem innocuous, like not having a conversation this very second somehow lead to totally terminating the route for a certain character. Because not dropping everything in your life to immediately follow up on a character's whims means that character is no longer in your romantic future, apparently. Worst of all, it may not even be clear that it terminates the route for them until far into the future.

Playing this game without a walkthrough or mod tool like Universal Ren'py Mod is a lesson in frustration. Any given choice can straight up harpoon your future with another character, to the point where if you want a good ending with one character you often have to deliberately ignore all the porn logic characters the game deliberately throws at you every other scene.

The argument about realism doesn't even apply, because the situations are neither realistic nor consistent. Why would two best friends who know each other's feelings about the MC deliberately choose to ignore them so they can both blindly pursue the MC? Why would Elena, knowing Layla's feelings for the MC, choose to add additional temptation to the pile? Why would hooking up with Juliet end the Nikki or Cara route when the MC was in a relationship with none of the girls at the time of the hookup? "Realism" in this game seems to boil down to choosing the girl of your choice as soon as they appear and neglecting everyone else, hovering around them waiting for the first opportunity to white knight for them. I would call that stalking or simping, but evidently you're rewarded for that.

Unfortunately, even this isn't consistent. If you want to pursue Elena, much of her interaction is gated behind pursuing Layla. But romance Layla too much and you presumably won't get anything with Elena. It's a clusterfuck of storytelling that can be handwaved any which way because none of it makes sense.

The developer clearly does this intentionally. "It's not a harem game" is probably one of their chief excuses, practically sticky-noted to the game's splash screen. But in order for this excuse to hold water, the game has to be fundamentally and appreciably different with each playthrough.

    But it isn't.

This game isn't a free roam game. This game isn't a free play. It's a linear VN. Even if you elect to play this game ten times, focusing solely and completely on a different girl each time, you'll still see a supermajority of the same scenes over and over. You'll read the same filler sequences over and over. And even if you do happen to choose an entirely different girl, many times you'll get the same scene with a different skin (looking at you Nikki/Cara).

Also remember that we're playing these games as they are released. We don't know the final outcome. We don't even know which characters have meaningful potential relationships. The game throws well over a dozen "love interests" at you, and presumably only 5 or 6 of them are actually major enough to warrant endings, but you don't know that for sure. Is it worth pursuing a minor character? Would doing so destroy your chances at a good ending? Who the fuck knows...

It's a classic example of a developer overestimating how interesting and varied their content is. You go through all this effort and uncertainty to see the content in the game, and the payoff is not worth the work you put into it just to see the story.

And to make it perfectly clear, the story is decent, if a bit formulaic. You play as a young man who moves in with his divorced (and very attractive) mother. You reconnect with old love interests and meet new ones. Your father is your typical Asshole Dad™️ who eventually becomes something resembling an antagonist in this game. Just like how almost every other male character in the game is eventually positioned either as an antagonist or rival, which is odd considering it's "not a harem game."

Why does Ethan still insist on getting in your way if—in your playthrough—you don't give a shit about Erynn? Why does Lucas get in your way if you don't pursue Layla? Why does A Manual care if you don't go after Cara? Why does your goofy old "friend" still undermine you if you don't pursue his crush, Valeria? Who knows... It's almost like the game presumes you're going to pursue those characters, but really it's just tries to bait you into doing it so they can pull the rug out from under you in a bullshit "gotcha! you shouldn't be trying to romance multiple women" lecture later.

Like most VNs, you're supposedly incredibly charming, attractive, and good in bed no matter how you play your character. You meet a bunch of women, each of whom are obviously super attracted to the MC, like all of the most boring, boilerplate games of this genre. Instead of writing romance and build up, where the characters charm each other and grow closer, they just submit to a juvenile fantasy of instant attraction so they can avoid the heavy lifting. However, for the most part all the women have interests and ambitions beyond just the main character. You want to get to know them.

Dialogue is decent, at times quirky and other times snappy and quick. The flow of dialogue to renders is very nice. You never feel like you're settled on the same screen for overly long just reading slide after slide of bad dialogue, which is a huge improvement over many other games in this genre.

But every time, you eventually run into that wall, where you're either bottlenecked by a choice made 400 slides ago, or you didn't hug or ogle the character enough and thus miss a scene (or you ogled them too much even though there's no way to know whether or not ogling would reward or detract points). It just leaves you with that salty taste in your mouth that you missed content for minimal reasoning, leaving you unsatisfied and feeling punished because you didn't interact with the characters in exactly the way the developer envisioned.

In other words, all the choice in this game boils down to a correct way to interact with each girl (plus points vs negative points), and then rigidly adhering to elevating the girl of your choice, spurning all other opportunities. Apparently the developer feels the "correct" way to play this game is to play the same game a dozen times, each time focusing on a different girl (many times seeing the same scene with a different model render), and utterly yielding to said girl's every whim and desire in just the right way to get maximum points with them. It's not even realistic, it just means you get to choose which girl you choose to become a total simp for.

This game ultimately has an objectively right and wrong way to play it, and the right way is incredibly frustrating and restrictive.

The game obviously takes a lot of inspiration from Witcher 3, both tongue in cheek and literally—it pokes fun about how you can't romance both Triss and Yennefer in that game, and shows the MC playing Witcher 3 in multiple scenes. But what the developer seems to have forgotten is that both the VN format and the genre of game Intertwined is precludes it from being like Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 can get away with the one-romance-only ending because it's fundamentally not a romance game. You're plunged into a massive, open world fantasy epic with a war, civil unrest, monsters, and the literal end of the world happening in the background of a game with strong open world exploration and character-building RPG elements, all of which are completely playable and engaging even if you don't choose to romance anybody. If you strip all that away and leave it with just a voiceless linear visual novel of the Triss and Yennefer storylines with bad animations, the game would absolutely suck, just like this game does.

(Also, it should be mentioned that the bad ending only happens if you explicitly tell Triss and Yennefer you love them both, attempting to pledge Geralt to both of them, not because you waved at Triss as you passed her in the Novigrad streets, like Intertwined.)

Many characters are slow-burned and breadcrumbed into oblivion. It falls into the lewd game trap of having sex be some kind of endgame payoff rather than organically weaving it into the story (you gotta rub their arms the right way first before you can proceed to a scene three days later, where you kiss them exactly how they want, before anything sexual is even on the table, obviously). If you're pursuing Elena, Erynn, or even Layla, be prepared to hang on to the barest tethers, because you still, 9 chapters into it, haven't come close to sleeping with any of them.

And other characters like Gabi, Valeria, ShaCarri, Emily, Melissa, Tori, Brooke, Iris? They have points but they're such minor characters that you wonder if they will even have romantic scenes, much less endings. Would pursuing them completely bork your ending with a more prominently featured girl? Is it worth bothering with them? Who the fuck knows! You're left in total limbo not knowing who to romance because it might be years before you get anything resembling a payoff, and making one random wrong choice might completely seal off an ending with the girl you want in the most convoluted of manners.

This game almost makes more sense if you read it as a reverse female fantasy MC. You take all the attributes of an attractive male love interest, put them in the MC, throw a bunch of temptation at him and expect him to spurn them all in order to mind-read and anticipate the desires of his one chosen pedestal girl. Unfortunately, you have to play as this idealized female fantasy without any of the psychic powers or futuresight evidently required.

Story - 5/5 The overall story is better than most others, although parts of it are static and unchangeable. It is interesting although parts of it can be confusing. Such as points system, which doesn't have that much of an effect on many parts that you would think would be changeable considering the amount of possible relationships. An example would be Zach, even if have full friend points and you avoid the girls he likes, he is still going to become your enemy. So much of the points system needs improvement. Should be clear indicators as to the status of the relationships. Even then many choices do not change what happens overall. You cannot completely avoid interaction with most characters.

Originality - 4/5 The story itself is not original there are hundreds of the same. The way it is done and some parts of the overall is different though. So it is still pretty original.

Renders - 4/5 They are well done, some are grainy in the lower chapters. Still higher quality than the usual.

Playability - 5/5 There is nothing confusing or difficult when playing, no grinding stuff out to get through the story and such. Which is a great thing considering there is not a lot of these story/games that don't make you grind in some way to get through it.

Animations - 1/5 One would think that considering the render quality is very good, that the animation quality would be as well. Unfortunately this is not the case. The usual 2 second and two motion sex in this one. Very amateur on that part. Since Story, renders and animations are pretty much the big three when it comes to adult games. As well as animation quality and amount of, being so important. This one misses the mark, could be so much better.

Grammar - 4/5 The story is easy reading, although some of the wording in parts needs fixing.

Amount of content - 5/5 The updates have not taken vast amounts of time. As well as most updates having a lot in them. Definitely better than so many others who take many months only to put out micro updates that have next to nothing in content.

Overall interesting story/game. Definitely needs improvement in some areas. Still interesting to play through at least once.

    1. Story
It's one thing when it's just "pleasing" or raising points for one girl vs the other, but when you have to make an irreversible choice between a whole scene or even worse a whole relationship..

One could argue that it's going for realism, but the story and dialogue are a little too fictional for that. (Not in a bad way, the dialogue is especially enjoyable.)

Some people might find it okay to replay for different choices, but personally I can't be bothered. I just do one playthrough and leave with the salty taste of having to give up on one girl because I was forced to make a choice.

    2. Renders
Those are superb though, which is why it's still worth playing even if you have to choose one half of the content or the other.

    3. Animations
They start off pretty terrible but get better later in the game (classic dev improving their skills/setup) nothing extraordinary.

    4. Overall
If you enjoy a story with a bunch of twists and turns, quirky/funny dialogue, superb renders, and choices where you can accidentally (or forcefully) take a loss for content, then you might find this game is for you.

    Story was just unintresting
    choices makes no difference
There is no stat that increase of decrease if you decide pick a rude choice
I was about to skip class and went i went to class i was rude and i was expecting some stat decrease But seems choices just don't matter
Almost every girl you meet jumps on mc his dick
    No bugs
    Only good thing is renders

Great game with fantastic models and just enough realism. It's a slow burn where it makes sense and hot and heavy when that makes sense, too. One of my favorite games on this site. Also, the twists at the end of each episode make sense and leave you wanting more.

This is an enjoyable coming of age/high school romp where the main character returns home after an absence ( Oh where have I heard this before?) and promptly becomes entangled with various girls and the drama it brings as it turns out their lives are all...intertwined.

The story is heavy on drama which I actually quite enjoyed...all those tears! *crying*

Intertwined wears it's heart on it's sleeve and often has nice humorous moments to break up the teen angst resulting from hormone overloads...hey, we've all been there right?

The renders are quite good and the characters are reasonably attractive...apart from Zak...who is not only the most hopeless and annoying "wingman" ever...ugh. He is just, eww, fugly.
Speaking from personal experience, but any guy who's tried picking me up in a bar/club that had a wingman like Zak? crashed and burned...

Kudos to Nyx for giving the main character a full tat sleeve. I love it! most devs tend not to have an inked main character. Being a lover of ink myself, I appreciated it ♡

The overall story is a bit far fetched but it is good for escapism and that's something we all need in these really dark times.

I look forward to the next update and the chance to witness more tears...

Good VN and worth checking out.

What an experience. Truly one of the best adult games I've ever played.
Very much a character driven story, with the plot that interweaves different characters together to create compelling plot with very well rounded characters. Absolutely gorgeous graphics as well, and Superb writing and vocabulary.
    Loved every bit of it.

    The possibilities!

So many choices, so many girls, so many routes. Massive kudos to dev for making some many different approaches possible and interesting.

Out of fun tried some crazy combinations of girls and choices and found nothing but fun and game acknowledging my messed up approach. Love it.

This is the first time I ever left a review on f95 but after playing this game I just have to give it. This is one of the best VN game I have ever played in a long time, I know this is weird, I initially came for the screenshot of the game, but then I stay for the story. Its been a long time since I have found some good VN story and this game just gave it to me. There's also a large cast of character so you can choose and pick which girl is your type. Long story short if you just want a fast game to see all the sex scene this game is not for you but if you want a game that is slow burner, has meaningful choices and a good storyline give this game a try. Again thank you Nyx for giving us this game and hoping for more future update.

This is the game that kicked off my love for VNs (and got me to set up an account on this site). It has a really cool story, amazing renders, and much better writing than the average VN.

The love interests really hooked me. I wish there was a path that you could pursue all of them, because they all have a great story. Like seriously, I feel a connection to made up characters in a game..... amazing.

I'd class this as a must play for everyone, and can't wait for more updates.

    Version: [v0.8.2a]
A great game, with a fun and wild story, that suffers greatly from 2 major issues - convoluted and unfair triggers system, and awful low fps animations that kills the mood repeatedly.

    The good:
    -The story:

Nyx does not give a F.
The story is wild, does not take itself too seriously (but still manages to provide some heartbreaking moments), and overall just REALLY fun.
Too often games in the 'slice of life' genre get stale and boring, that's not the case here and I really appreciate it. I kept smiling and occasionally laughing the whole way through.
If you're looking for a reasonable, believable story you might roll your eyes here and there, but if you're able to let go and just have fun with all the crazy twists - you'll have a lot of fun with this one.

    -character models:
They are good looking, attractive (the LI's at least) and overall just really good, there are some familiar models but not a big deal.

    -Pacing:
Definitely on the slow burn side of things - so that might be a bad thing for you, but I like it.
Nyx does a great work building tension and reaching a satisfactory climax.
You get plenty of hot scenes, you get character development, you do not get bored, great job overall.

    The Mediocre:
    -Dialogues:

They are pretty fun, often funny.
Do you know the feeling of "huh, that's definitely not how humans talk" you get when you play VNs? well, you only get it sometimes, which is honestly better than the average game in the genre.

    -Sex scenes
They are very very vanilla, pretty well executed but get a little boring sometimes.
I'd say they are good enough, nothing more, nothing less.

    The Bad:
    -Animations:

    WHY?? seriously, just why??
You finally get some action with your favorite LI, things are hot and heavy, clothes come off, everything is just right and then...
10(?) FPS grainy animation the COMPLETLY kills the mood and ruins everything.
Honestly, I just don't get it, why are they there?
It does get a little better in the new updates, but it's still pretty bad.
At this point just straight up deleting the animations will benefit the game.
I get that having animations is the standard in big projects like this at this point, but if you can't do them remotely well - just don't do them. please. I was having a great time and every single animation just threw me off.

    -The triggers
A convoluted system that makes zero sense and will make you miss a bunch of content if you do blind playthrough.
and not in a somewhat fair(?) way of "huh, I guess saying that at chapter 2 really came back to bite me in the ass 3 chapters later, but in a "oh I randomly picked some random line in a random encounter, now i'll never meet that LI I was waiting for just because, its also VERY easy to just close a path forever by the silliest things, and you might have to get VERY invested in characters you dislike just to get content with the ones you do like.
It's a very frustrating experience that contributes nothing I feel, but for some reason Nyx keeps doubling down on it and at this point I don't think it can or will get better.

    To sum it up-
The story is great, the renders are great, the sex is fine and overall the experience is great.
But - jarring animations and a very very very frustrating triggers systems that will make you miss a bunch of content/lock you out of paths in a pretty random way just sours the experience.

Intertwined could have been a very strong 4* VN, it does a lot of things really well, hell I might have given it a 5*, but his 2 weakest points are so significant and major I just can't give it a 4. sorry.
I do recommend it though, It's beautiful in many ways if you can get past the issues.
I'll definitely come back and try it again in the future, really hoping to have enough reasons to improve my ratings because honestly Nyx does great work.

I guess most points have been made but still, this is my take on the game.

If you are expecting a harem fap feast, this is not it.

There are enough beautiful girls to feast your eyes on - even the ones I would not go for personally are easy on the eyes - but in terms of sex scenes this is a really tame one. Instead you get a lot of romance and characters to care for. I did appreciate the humorous banter, had me laugh out a few times and put a smile on my face many more times.
The decisions you take mostly matter and lead to altered dialogues or different scenes and most of them actually make sense. Once you see how the main characters are connected to the others the title of the game is totally justified.
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
    Well done, Nyx.

If I were to offer critique I would highlight how surprisingly difficult it can be to stay out of some of the girls' panties. On the other hand some routes for characters you may want to pursue are very unforgiving. Balancing could be improved.
The comic relief character, supposedly my friend, Zach, has zero redeeming qualities. Why anyone would tolerate that prick is beyond me.

Overall very entertaining if you are not laser focused on sex in a porn game, definitely recommended.

So far (1st playthrough) a superbly written game with cute and beautiful characters who have different personalities and issues. I love the humour, 4 and sayonara have made me chuckle. I really didn't expect this to be so good and heart warming; mostly a nice feel good vibe (yet to see how Erynn's situation gets resolved). I don't normally play games in school settings as most are simply porn and little story plus bad teenage personal experiences, however, I was persuaded by @FatGiant who also likes another of my favourite games, Chasing Sunsets and I'm glad he did.

For me it's not a porn game but more than that; the porn is nice and appreciated but the story is more important. I like to stay faithful in real life so played this the same way and only 1 sex scene and now and well into the game (Layla bj in the hot tub). I really hope that the writers allow the player (John) to stay true where that path is chosen. I'd like to be a good friend to Erynn and help her out but not cheat; hopefully that'll be possible.

Edit: Ok played it part way through this time following Alexis (only) path and again wow, so well written, thanks! Plus many more sex scenes.

On scores story is 5/5 as are the graphics. Also I think it has a high replay value as it can be played in many different ways different girl routes or multiple. Many thanks and keep up the great work.

Surely a top tier game. Renders are decent but a little grindy at the start. But now it's ok girls models are usual daz 3D models. But story is interesting all the characters are intertwined in an interesting way. Girls have their own personalities. Not a harem game but each different girl's path is interesting and lovely. Fair amount of gameplay. If you like story driven games give this one a try. It's worth playing. Layla is cute and funny, alexis is lovely, new girl Valerie is also nice. Nikki is also nice. There is little humor too.

Keep up the good work dev. Looking forward to next updates.

One of the best games I have ever played. There are young beautiful students and hot teachers, gorgeous models and fitness body athletes, Chocolates and ardent latinas, cute teens and hot milfs, ordinary relationships and taboo. And also new beautiful characters are constantly appearing. Secrets are revealed, lies emerge, new facts appear from the history of those with whom you are close, which can completely change everything. For heroes 5 stars, for interesting plot 5 stars.

Everything about this game was great to me until the whole drama started, it started feeling like a soap opera or teeny drama show, culminating with Melissa being angry at Andres for shouting at MC's mom when he was cheated on, I dunno maybe that gets resolved by the end of that plot point, but I just couldn't stand it anymore.

I don't like soap operas, not a fan of drama's, not a fan of cheating (sharing is fine when you know what you're getting yourself into) and these factors were starting to creep into the story earlier, but I could have tolerated it back then, but the more the story became about the side characters, the less engaging and tolerable it became for me.

I'm still giving it 2+ stars for the models and the game that I played for like the first couple hours, I'm just warning the people that if you like how the game is going in the first 3 hours or so, don't expect it to last and save your time.

If you're into stuff like that, keep going, but it will take some time to get to that.

Amazing VN. story is long, abit of a slow burner and quite obvious at times. but that doesn't take away the over-arching storyline.... extremely good.

visuals also very very good..... far too many H.O.T ladies in this novel.... can someone make it a VR so i can upload my mind and stay there forever!? hehe

lewd-scenes are well planned and animated. few and far between. but more than enough for the story.

    Highly recommended!

    An amazing visual novel.
Intertwined. The name really spoke for itself, the more you play the game, the more you trully feel the tittle.
The story is top notch, start off very simple but interesting but slowly took me by surprise by how complicated the relationship between the characters.

I regret not checking this game sooner. Not all the love interests are presented in the description here. Overall, varied cast, good story (you are *of course* completely irresistible to the ladies, but the writing is not too much) - It's a good game. Not as many scenes as other games, but still a decent-ish amount for the plot. They serve the story well enough.

As noted in other reviews, the animations are a bit choppy and there is no sound.

Would still recommend if you have a few hours to sink into it.
