Unreal Engine Introducing NSFW Open-World RPG Project [Development Thread]

I'm excited to share an early look at my NSFW game in development with Unreal Engine 5. It's shaping up to be a mix of immersive storytelling, semi-open-world exploration, and deep customization. Here's a bit more about the vision:

The Core Idea

I'm aiming for a narrative-driven RPG in a semi-open world where player choices really matter, inspired by the cinematic style of Detroit: Become Human. Missions will have flexible approaches, with some Quick Time Events for tense moments, all in a setting that gives plenty of freedom.

Planned Features

  • Semi-Open World Elements: Exploration with adaptable mission objectives and QTEs to add some cinematic tension.
  • Extensive Customization: Options for skin tones, clothing varieties, body types, and facial details to let players create unique characters.
  • Choice-Based Story: Decisions that branch the narrative, affecting relationships and outcomes for replayability.
  • Cinematic Sequences: Leveraging Unreal Engine 5 for high-quality visuals and cutscenes.
Handling File Sizes with a Custom Launcher

Unreal games can get large, so I'm building a launcher like those on Steam or Epic—focusing on downloading just the update files needed. It should also make it easy to browse and grab DLCs.

DLC Approach

The plan is for modular DLCs, each like a self-contained story with its own dialogues, characters, animations, and cinematics. Players can pick and choose what to download.

Current Progress

Right now, I'm knee-deep in prototyping the core systems, customization tools, and launcher basics. More updates on progress, like early art or demos, coming as things advance—maybe even beta spots down the line.

Your Input?

I'd appreciate any thoughts: What features stand out to you? Ideas for customization or DLC ideas? Feel free to chime in below.

Thanks for checking it out—looking forward to sharing more as it comes together.

I'm sorry but this just sound like a generic directionless game that ticked all the buzzword check-boxes but nothing about it really stand out.

What's the idea here ? What's the premise of the story ? What's the core gameplay loop ? Do you have anything that will give this "project" a semblance of identity so it wont feel like it's just a tech demo ?

Sorry about that! I got so caught up in the tools and the big picture that I totally forgot to explain the story part

The idea came to me when I was playing a VN and wanted to take control of a different character—not just like in Wild Life where you swap characters, but with entirely new storylines crafted for those popular side characters. That’s where this idea sparked!

The main concept is a story revolving around a diverse group of main characters—both male and female—who each start with unique circumstances and embark on tales with different genres. Players can freely pick any character to play and shape their story, but the choices they make can ripple out and affect the other characters’ journeys too. Since each character’s situation is so distinct, players can download and play tailored content for each one separately, making it super flexible and personalized.

x2 what is the story about? will it be like 3d metroidvania? will there be something like H-info? also tell more about the mc

For now, I’m starting with two characters, each with their own separate storyline, though they might share some connections. One of the main characters is a married woman who’s a commander, and the other is a guy who just broke up with his girlfriend. The big idea behind this project is to cover a wide range of preferences and fantasies, like BDSM, threesomes, hotwife scenarios, and other spicy scenes. Plus, the game is going to be fully 3D!

That uh... that's just "generic directionless game that ticked all the buzzword check-boxes" a second time. I also wouldn't point to Unreal 5 as if it's a positive, as the majority of those games run like turbo aids, even coming from big studios.

Edit: Figured just light criticism was wrong of me, so I'll give some (probably stupid) advice. The first being that your post sounds like PR speak. Like some game studio PR speak to sell a mid game. Descriptions seen thousands of times, and they never deliver. Completely devoid of any flair, flavor, or style. The second is from a gamer perspective. We left QTEs behind for a reason. No one likes them. I'd advise giving that idea the axe. Third is the UE5 usage. Performance issues, nuff said. Visual fidelity means nothing if people can't run it.

And fourth isn't advice. It's me wishing you good luck on your project!

Thanks for the advice! I’ve never made an NSFW game before, and your first two tips are super helpful. As for UE5 and performance concerns, no worries there! Even though I haven’t built an NSFW game yet, I’ve spent a lot of time learning how to optimize UE5 projects since I don’t have a super powerful computer myself.
And thanks again for the great suggestions!

This is just an early demo version, and the main scriptwriter hasn’t started yet, so there’s a high chance the characters might change.
But I’ll definitely talk to the team about the main female character!

So it's a single semi open-world map, and you can pick and choose which character you wanna play ? And the chosen character will dictate which content you'll be experiencing ?

Does the open world contain all the content/locations at all time ? Or would it be something like, just the general areas for all characters, and when you choose a certain character, then the areas that's related to that specific character will be unlocked and become accessible ?

Ngl I do think it's an interesting idea, but to me it sound like you'd be better off making a simple anthological Telltale style game first...

The idea is that locations and content come in three different types:

  1. Private locations and content: These are exclusive to a specific character, tailored just for them.
  2. Shared locations and content: These are accessible to two or more characters, but not open to everyone. They’re designed based on each character’s storyline.
  3. Public locations and content: These are open to all characters, available for everyone to interact with.

This is the plan for now, but it might evolve as the design and development process moves forward. To start, we’re focusing on fully fleshing out the storyline for just one or two characters.
