Is it a hot take to think most western 3d/cg games look ugly?
I'm not trying to be inflammatory, but I just look at the screen shots and click off of them
people must like them if they keep making them, but do people actually think they look good?

and by western 3d/gc I mean more realistic 3d models and not the more anime/cartoony models.

to go into detail, often they are in a bit of a uncanny valley, and because they are more realistic looking
it weirds me out when they are shaped weird and
so many models have a botched ass
and the lighting and hair can look like crap and make the model look worse

anime and cartoony models to me at least can get away with it because they arnt realistic and my brain isnt judging them as hard
and idk its artistically cohesive? like no duh a anime model with anime shaders and basic lighting done in a way to look good with the anime model,
is gona look better then some random daz model thrown in blender or stuck in some random ure5 game

sure they can be done well, but soo many games are just ugly lighting on some daz model with barbie doll hair
you either need to do a uber realisitc model or make it slightly cartoony

and like anime/cartoony models seem to have a easier time of looking pleasent just because of its style

you're comparing 0-day amateur 3d artists to pro level draughtsmen. the fair comparison would be someone who started drawing a week ago.

the problem is that pro level takes 10 years of hard work to get there.

I wouldnt quite say that, anime and cartoons both are styles that were made to look pleasant with less effort.
like a "level 3" anime artist I think would look better then a "level 3" "realism" artist

Interesting theory so can you give an example of what you think is a level 3 anime artist?

Comes down to personal preference. I (and seemingly you) prefer the more anime/cartoony style of something like Koikatsu, others prefer the "realistic" approach of something like DAZ. Most will play games that use either, some hate one style or the other.

"level 3" was just something I threw out t say amateur but not absolute dogshit
observation maid is a bit shit and probably just some random model they found some where
or just used some random base model and stuck a head on them

leans on the more shit side with out being absolute trash like a game called Daigaku Gurashi
there was a femdom game worse then Daigaku Gurashi, but i cant remember its name

Yeah I wanted to see a pic or something. I mean level 3 could mean anything. Like I dont mind games with more rough art, but idk if that's level 2 or 3  So like noones gonna know what you mean by level 3 without a visual example I think.

kinda thought you'd just search for the game on this site and look at the preview pics
this is one of the ruffer games i've played willingly
i dont imagine id like a realistic 3d game like that

Okay so you prefer that over daz i take it? I thought you meant like drawn art. Well anyways I would put what you posted about same place as the average daz game, meaning they both look bad.

on one hand its all subjective, but it would be a nothing burger of a conversation to just say everything is subjective
that game is on the lower end of what id play, and what id consider armature and a bit rough

if you would provide a "realistic" game you think is on par with that game, i can spout out my opinion on it and why I think one is better then the other

I think the average 3d anime game like that is better then what I posted and a lot more pleasant to look at then a lot of realistic/wesern 3d games

honey select is a more realistic but still has anime proportions and has animefeatures, i can stand that
then theres subverse which is more of a studio then amateur. it has more western and realistic models, but still a bit cartoonish.
sub verse has a tinge of overwatch going on, where the hair is more like a glob then individual strands of hair

blah blah blah, I just think the average daz game looks bad

I mainly play 2D games, but the occassional exceptions are japanese 3D games. 3D Daz games have too much uncanney valley. I am weirded out seeing 3D models being "frozen" in a slide show in Renpy games, too. Because my brain is used to 3D models being in motion in regular games like Mass Effect and the only time the 3D characters become still is when Sheppard is making a decision. But in Renpy Daz games, the 3D models are all frozen in motion all the time and they "move" like a slide show. I know the reason is they are screenshots or renders but it is still weird to me. Aside from the uncanney valley face.

It's pretty common. But usually the problem lies on how people preceive 3D CG/Daz games instead of the game itself. 3D CG/Daz games is not mainstream so it felt like some culture shock for some people

It may be less "people like the aesthetic of 3D rendered into still images" and more "it's easier to get the proportions of a human body to look anatomically correct by opening this 3D model and adjusting a few features" that make DAZ3D and other 3D programs popular to use. And sure plenty of folks have used Koikatsu or HoneySelect to make their sprites or CGs, but that's not fair use and if ILLGAMES felt like it, they could sue a whole ton of indie devs all at once and wipe out a bunch of games. It's honestly a mercy they haven't already.

Also, it's easier to strip and pose a 3D model than to pay a 2D artist draw tons of CGs. I hope that toon shaders become a lot more common to use so that uncanny valley isn't as big of an issue.

Both the western and anime art you see in most porn games is terrible. I don't know how some people get off to it without an extreme story fetish thrown in. While some of the best western 3dcg already goes past the uncanny valley, what's important is that as tech improves lifelike models, lighting and animations will become the norm meaning it will appeal to the vast majority of the global population like live action porn does. That's the future, it can grow enormously. Unlike studio-produced live action porn, porn games can actually deliver on story-related fetishes and other things that fall well outside a porn studio's cinematographic capabilities.

While perhaps representing a majority of the porn game market at the moment, the appeal of 2d/drawn anime games will remain limited to the minority of people who are turned on by cartoons/hentai manga over real(ish) people.

I find them completely weird and prefer everything over it, even pure text. It must be that they edge on the verge of being realistic while not hitting it, because i have no problem with skyrim mods, which you cant really call "cartony" or "anime" (for the most part at least.

Depends entirely on the game and artist. I would say in my personal opinion that western output has improved a lot over the last 18 months or so. There are a lot of great productions to check out now. A few years ago even, games from western artist could literally be a default character standing in front of a plain wall in blender with no work done or lighting or anything else. There are new standards emerging it seems.

It's often a matter of preference, nothing wrong with that. I mean, you answered yourself. People must like them if they keep making it.
