Is it problematic for the very first scene of a game to display non original art ?

Hello everybody.

I'm currently working on a Visual Novel which is also a Fangame.

Meaning people that doesn't know this specific fandom could be lost if they don't get a proper introduction and some basic but very important informations.

So I decided to add a quick prologue to my game. (Around 5 or 10 minutes depending of how fast you read.)

My problem is that art is pricey and that giving this prologue original art is not my priority. So currently I'm using art coming directely from official works done for this fandom.

After this prologue every visual asset used is 100 % original.

My question is : Do you think this can make people drop the game in the very first minute, and if yes how could I avoid it without spending too much on my prologue ?

Thanks.

You could make the prologue an optional separate game if you don't want to risk it, and in that game make it very clear where the art comes from giving full credit to the original artist.

Then people that don't like that or already have the information they need can skip it and start from the point of your original art.

By "separate game" you mean to make the player able to skip it, right ?

It would looks weird to create another game just to feature this 5/10 minutes prologue.

Not really, I've seen a few vns delivering side-stories as separate games. Especially if they are short and/or optional like you mentioned.

That way if you face issues with the original artist(s) you wouldn't have to take down the entire game and just that side-story.

But you can always just make a short summary instead if you want to avoid using non-original artwork altogether.

I think you can get away with it by writting before you start the prologue that art is expensive and that for this scene you wont be using costum artwork because it isnt worth the cost.

Simply giving players a warning an and ability to skip it(for returning players who dont want to watch it again and no dont make it so they need to have watched it once before they can skip it. People like me cleance our pc regulary of the filth dev's leave behind after unistall)

But yeah.
Just warn them before they start that due to cost you wont be using costum art in the prologue and it shoud be fine.

If you don't intend to continue with borrowed art, don't start with borrowed art. You have 2-3 mins to communicate to the player what the game is; if you're filling that with pirated art and "the story so far", it's likely they'll assume your entire game will be that.

Just skip it, apart from a "this is a parody of story X, if you want to know more, click here" and send them to somewhere that's not your game.

My main concern was about players, but you're right to bring down copyright issues.

I also have the same problem with "music" which would cost me too much for a mediocre result compared to the original soundtrack.

Does I have a high risk for my porn Fangame to be taken down, even if it's non-commercial ?

(PS : Fandom is Kill-la-Kill and not Nintendo.)

it would probably just fit much better if you recreated the scenes in whatever way you're making the rest of the art. otherwise there's gonna be a sudden catastrophic quality drop which will be like a slap in the face.
