I'm a game dev looking to work on a new Yandere themed project, and i was just going to have the main character be pre-named. does not being able to name your character ruin your immersion?

It's sorta telling if you even think players should ever be naming a characters in a story you wrote, set in a place you thought up.

I like to be able to use my own name. I like to immerse myself with the games I play.

I do not like naming the MC, personally. I especially HATE games that force you to name the MC, as in there is no preset default name if I opt to skip [or hit enter on a blank name template].

I default to names like 'my dude, my guy, laddie' if I'm forced to name the MC, because they make stuff sound funny but still will work with the text. Laddie especially since it can be a name, or just turn everyone Scottish.

If it's something you're particularly concerned about, I'd recommend allowing the character to be renamed but have a default name [unless that would ruin something like in game content that has the MCs name on it].

I imagine most men who like Yandere girls also happen to be men who like to self insert, i can self insert on any name personally but i have seen people complain about it before.

seems like the easiest nice thing to add just for the people who want it, and zero problem for people who want to use defaults. where as fixing that omission afterwards might be laborous.

I don't mind, but depends on genre and how is game made. For blank character i remade him, if is fleshed or have option rename it, then i stay with premade name.

It's one of those things where if you don't give the option to people will bitch about it, so why not just do it? Especially in Ren'Py, where it's just a couple of lines of code to have the option to name them or just leaving it blank for a default name.
The only real downside as a dev is not being do "things" with the name (like having a character shouting out the name in full caps or do something like "Billyyyyyyy!"), but there are ways to work around it when writing.

Im sentimental so i always use the same name for all my characters, the name was a complete accident but i kinda stuck with it for every game even if it doesnt make much sense

since you can modify/insert/replace words in dialogues (like some incest patches do, or the fixer with itsh druuunk shpeech filter), wouldn't it be possible to apply it to custom names? although that's more effort to add something you don't care about.

I never name the characters and go for the default one unless the game doesn't allow blank entries. Though one time I named the MC "Whatever" didn't end well, don't name it Whatever.

For me naming is important because I like to use a default name I use across all AVN's I play just out of habitat honestly. Maybe cause I been using the same name for awhile it just feels weird to use anything else. While if I can't I'll still play a game but it does suck to see.
