Overall, I've been avoiding RPGM games because I'm not a fan of the top-down style. I figured I'd give them a second chance, though. Anyone able to recommend ones I should look at? My go-tos are Love and Sex: Second Base, Harem Hotel, Mystic Manor, and Parental Love. Any tips would be appreciated!

What don't you like about it? If you only want VN games, then just play VN games. There are even non-standard RPGM games that are strictly VN like Tyrant Quest.

Like I said above, it's mostly the top-down style but it's also the pixelated graphics that most of them use.

Just use the RPGM prefix and then try games that grab your attention.

If you are looking for a more smooth transition from western games then your best bet is probably to start with western RPGM games like NLT Media, ICSTOR, Beggar of Net or similar because they tend to be more straightforward and don't require combat or more complex gameplay mechanics.

Recommend lust pandemic and treasure of Nadia. Both completed games with a ton of content.

treasure of nadia and other nlt stuff because alot of the assets are fully customised and are not a typical 16-bit pixely looking rpgm game
