For those who play both Western and Japanese games. Which one do you prefer? And besides censorship, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each faction? What can Western developers learn from the Japanese (besides completing games) and vice versa.

For me, the art style is most important whether I pick up a game or not. Western games have a wider range of styles and cultural influences. Japanese games often break out from Western story tropes. But I wouldn't choose a game only based on its geographics.

I largely stick to western because Japanese games to be saturated with tags I avoid.

I think a lot of the standout features of Japanese games are as you mention is they more or less come out completed and/or have a clear end goal/vision for where the game is going, but say they are on rpgm, they usually take full advantage and add gameplay elements that make sense. On the other hand with its a straight VN they typically go pretty much straight into the porn with little buildup. The main weaknesses I see are they largely have a lot of the same tropes, samey writing, pretty misogynistic, lots of incel leanings and fantasies like getting cuckolded and the aforementioned misogyny/rape and again tons of tags I usually avoid.

Western games tend to suffer a lot of the inverse, the games often stall for years, devs have no clear end goal or vision, try to fit too many hats and put tags that are diametrically opposed or end up doubling their work if they want to do it right and make a true opposite path. But in terms of strength, obv depends on the dev but the dialogue tends to be better, more use of relationships/building, typically tend to be 3d instead of pixel/2d, though that can vary as well.

There are a couple of standout Japanese games that are fantastic(AA2, Kamidori, Rance). But from what I've play a lot of them are pretty trash or at the very least on par with the multitude of quick DAZ3D Repny cash grabs that gets abandoned after a few weeks.
I more or less avoid anything Japanese that's RPGM, one of those "click a button and watch an animation" wannabe flash games, or a 2D platformer. Or anything that is censored/doesn't have an uncensor patch. The art-style of many of them also just kind of bore me, which is strange because I fap quite regularly to hentai.

It is completely related to what you consume outside of porn.

Anyone that consumes a lot of anime/manga will gravitate towards Japanese adult games/art, those that consume western cartoons/comics will prefer western 2D adult games and people that just play 3D games will stick to 3D adult games.

For porn games (which I guess is what you are asking about), I prefer Japanese games over Western games.

Japanese games tend to be freewheeling sex fests with epic stories of good vs evil, where they throw money, items, and gear at your character and they are more interested in the story they are telling, instead of the choices you made while interacting with various NPCs. You can grind and make your characters over powered, and that seems to be okay in Japanese games.

Western games feel like they are life lessons about acceptance and fairness and they focus on restricting the money, items, and gear your character has and that they are more interested in having you grind and 'earn' every single item you have. The choices you make while interacting with NPCs seems more important than the story they are trying to tell.

To me, Japanese's 2D manga esthetics can look a bit boring after a while. I love to find good Western 2D graphics and characters, and I think it's kinda rarer? :)
(or it was rarer a few years ago, I might not be up to date )
