Just a thank you for all the devs that participate here

I know y'all work hard to produce your content, and I'd imagine having it put up for free can be a real downer at times. Nevertheless, so many of you choose to participate, answer questions, and take criticism... even when that criticism is straight up rude.

Lord knows we can't sub to all the devs we like. Personally, I try to drop a month or two of a sub to my favorites whenever cash allows.

This website has given me real insight into game development, as well as plenty of hours of fun.

I grew up in the 90s. Back then, as many of you probably remember, the best video games were made by geeky dudes on the fringes of society. Many of them put their passion into their stories. Some of those stories are as good or better than anything the big companies produce today.

I see that same culture here. True, it's decidedly more pornographic... but it's also more real. Some ultra-produced AAA game is great, but it just doesn't allow the freedom of action myself and so many other yearn for. Gaming allows me to experience things I literally cannot experience in my normal life (not just fucking 3 elvish chicks at once either, lol, not that I'm complaining). While playing some of these games I've run into plot twists that grabbed my attention so hard I couldn't stop playing, even if I had long since forgotten about the sexual aspect of the game. The Paladin class plot when going to the demon realm in Roundscape:Adorevia comes to mind but there are many others.

So I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for producing shit that isn't corrupted by the crazy bullshit going on in the world. Thank you for not giving a fuck about all the bullshit social propriety we live with day to day. Thank you for pouring your heart and soul into something despite all the adversity.

That's pretty much it. Sorry if this is off-topic or a repost, but I wanted to express my sentiment.

From a small developer who is making his first steps: You're welcome bud! I'm happy to share my game here!

I grew up in the 90' too and I know what you mean, something is really wrong about the game indutry, I don't know if the spirit of the companies has changed or if it was me who changed, but with some little exceptions I'm not attracted at all to AAA games, and let's not even talk about all that crap about games with micropayments, incredible bugs, lack of originality....

One of the nicest things I heard about my game was: "I came for the fap but I found much more". Of course there are games here that are purely focused on the sexual, but there are many others that have excellent stories and the big companies could learn a few things from some adult game developers haha

That is a very nice message, despite all the hard effort, it's a pleasant experience to find others devs always willing to help, some great users providing valiant feedbacks.

Sometimes a single user helping you has more weight than 100 criticizing you.

Although i understand that this message is directed towards other senior devs with a lot of free content released out there but being a small new dev myself , i can relate to few lines there and for that , i say thank you :) These kind of comments make all the time and effort worth it.

Thank you. As others have said, but it's worth repeating, thank you for taking the time to express the sentiment.

That was a nice little boost this morning. :)

You made our day!

We grew up in the 90s as well, and we remember what games were like back then. There were a lot more passion projects, but with the backing of professional publishing houses. Gaming was at that sweet spot where there was enough money to be made to warrant the effort by mid-sized studios and publishers, but not yet huge and global as it is today to have it be swallowed by conglomerates like EA or Activision. Good times were had with gems like Diablo, Legacy of Cain, Dungeon Keeper, all BioWare RPGs, Might & Magic series, Freespace, Doom, Hexen, Heretic, and so many others...

It's funny how one's youthful experiences are imprinted into their adulthood. It's why we're making a CRPG like those golden age games, and why baby boomers always try to relive Woodstock, lol.

Holy shit, those are some of my favorites. I always wanted more Freespace games; surprised those never had a follow-up after 2.

I think you're completely right; there just aren't many passion project games these days. The gaming industry seems more like the music industry, with top talent swapping companies every couple years. It's hard to have a cohesive storyline when there's no continuity like that.

Volition made the Freespace games, and, while popular, none of them ever made a killing financially. Space sims are a niche genre, but there's definitely a market for them (case in point: Star Citizen). Also, the story of Freespace 2 kind of ended on a definitive note - where do you even go after the collapse of the Sol node? There were some fan projects done to address the issue (some of them are still being worked on to this day), but the series ran into the same narrative problem as did Mass Effect with its Reapers - once you reveal and defeat the lovecraftian cosmic horror (even in a pyrrhic victory), where do you go from there? Not much can top the Shivans... though it would've been fun to find out what happened to Admiral Bosch and the Iceni!

As far as the mainstream gaming industry is concerned, that's more or less a lost cause. Too much money to be made, and the greedy corps are milking people for all they're worth... This won't change until consumers become more discerning, which, if the past 30+ years are any indication, won't happen any time soon.
