Maybe try using Locale Emulator? I have no idea how you got that bug though.

Paula game is in VX Ace which is an infinitely better engine than the default VX the main game is made in.
Try moving the folder to the drive root. Some old games fall apart if the path to the game folder has characters it doesn't expect.

There are days when the painter is playing outside his house, enter his room in one of those days and examine the closet.

There is exactly 1 scene with men but it's not with the main character

Still no good. I extract it again with 7-zip and Nanazip but same error (but no mojibake characters changes to japanese if I use the locale emulator)
