Seeking Looking for game with good story and grind outside of the visual novel category

Something similar to Princess & Conquest and games by Inusuku, althought these two games might have decent story, the grind is quite fun and I'd like to find something better. Maybe with a more linear path than Princess & Conquest's constantly deviating story directions (I don't mind choose your own adventure but it can get confusing at times) and Inusuku's varied gameplay (RPG, money making quests, cohabitation and even the night time activity). Preferably if the game is in 2D and not "realistic looking 3D model". No offense to fellow VN enjoyers but I'd like to do something more than just reading.
