I'm just getting started on a project that i have been thinking about for some time now. As a gamer i know what i enjoy most in a game, and what i really dislike. On that note, i would really like to know what is important for you guys!

1) What game engine do you prefer? ( If you have a favorite)
2) What aspect of the game/visual novel is most important for you?
3) Do you prefer a game with or without audio (voice acting, music, effects , etc.)

really appreciate the feedback, looking forward to reading the replies!

Regards,
Tanz

Well, to keep it simple.

1) Ren'py or RPGM if done well, without grinding or fighting.
2) Story. Don't care about the rest, even if the visuals are bad, a good story will always save it, but never the other way around.
3) I'll mute it anyway and continue listening to my own music, so would be wasted on me personally.

And good luck on your project!

Yeah, what this guy said applies to me personally as well but you have to know your audience. For every person that says story rules over everything, there's a person who will say that only renders and sex scenes matter. I would put more effort into renders and sex scenes as, honestly, most people on here don't have high standards at all when it comes to what they consider good stories, so your efforts will get increasingly diminished returns the better you get as a writer. I've seen good renders and sex scenes carry a game to stardom but hardly the other way around. You should at least make sure your story is somewhat adequate though.

Very true. Some will even skip a game if it doesn't have good renders or animated scenes and on the other side HTML games do very well with just some random porn pictures or hand drawn stick figures.
Just put in a good effort and make it to the best of your ability. You can't please everyone, but I'm sure a lot will have fun with it if you do. :)

Ren'py, though I don't have as big an aversion to RPGM and Unity games as some people do. Obviously your engine should be appropriate to the kind of game you want to make.

2) What aspect of the game/visual novel is most important for you?
Sex scenes > legible English = story > visual presentation > audio

Assuming all of the above is at least competently done, that is. Obviously if the visual presentation consisted of stick figures fornicating it doesn't matter if your story is a well-crafted masterpiece.

3) Do you prefer a game with or without audio (voice acting, music, effects , etc.)
With audio. Even if I mute it half the time, I personally see it as a matter of putting care in your presentation.

1) Ren'py rules supreme here. Ease of use for the player is unmatched, in my opinion. (But I'm an oddball Linux user, and therefore biased)

2) I will not play a game just for the sex scenes, even if they are well done. Regular porn is fine for that. Writing and art must both be good. If either is lacking, I am unlikely to be impressed. Also, your command of English must be almost impeccable. If it isn't, you will need a proofreader, at the very least.

3) Audio is not essential. Well chosen music is welcome, though. Voice acting can be underwhelming if not done properly. "Actresses" reading in monotone are worse than silence. Do it well or not at all.

But don't listen too much to complaints here, unless they are about technical stuff, or bugs. People have different priorities and kinks. You can't please everybody, and it is a bad idea to try. If you have a clear idea of what you want to do, you should be true to that vision.
I wish you all the best for your project.

Renpy - it's fast, easy and doesn't need a top flight computer to play.
Most games with Unity engines are badly optimised and Unreal is too heavy on resources.
RPGMaker can be good (Tower of Trample, Treasure of Nadia...), but it's often crap.

2) What aspect of the game/visual novel is most important for you?
First, a good character design and characterisation.
Then, some build-up and sexual tension.
I'm probably in the minority here but I do not care about animations. Hot detailed sex writing is way more important in my opinion and much more exciting!

Personally, I don't really like voice acting in most hentai games and I often mute the music in every porn game I play, especially during the sex scenes. It breaks the immersion for me. But I would love some sexual sound effects (moans, slapping, kisses...)

1) engine doesn't matter as long as the engine fits the game. Don't make a visual novel in Rpgmaker for example. That said it's much harder to screw up the basics with Renpy than it is with Rpgmaker or unity. To many rpgmaker games are walking simulators as example.

2) All of it really. A good visual novel needs to have good visuals, a good story, good English writing, and good sex scenes. If one of them is lacking, I will most likely lose interest at some point.

3) well done audio could really help a game, but I can't say there is a game that actually use it well. Most music used are 80s porn melodies on a loop and is just more annoying then anything ells. Sound effects could really make a scene feel more alive, but outside of some one time thing on like a car crash , it's not really used. Not that most stories really provide any base for sound effects though.

Same for music. A sad scene could be lifted up with some slow piano music for example. Or if it's an action scene you could have some higher tempo music. It would require a different kind of story then 99% on here though. Less of a sex story and more a story which has sex in it. Just don't put 80s porn music over sex scenes...

For voice acting if you cannot get professional voice actors, don't bother with it. It's horrendous and will just bring your game down.
