What are some Must Have features in adult games? Like romance options, story direction, game modes, censoring options, etc.

"The game could have been perfect, but it just needed ____________."

They really need some build up. Something to get the player invested. Options for which perso to romance is nice, but not required.
I don’t know I need game modes like sand box. But sand box is an alternative to good writing when trying to create build up.

i often feel sex scenes aren’t well written. Like three images and one or two liners. if new to the genre and looking for examples I suggest reading some of the high rated stories on literotica.

Thanks, I started reading Slingshot and the writing quality is incredible compared to some of the visual novels

They have some good ones on there. I’m not saying you have to be an amazing polished writer (although that wouldn’t hurt) but. . . I took inspiration from some of them for writing my scenes And I think it helped.

Eroticism. Many games have sex scenes without any hint of eroticism. I know VNs are targeted mostly to males and most of us have a really basic and primitive approach to sex. But in a "literature" product as a VN, I expect the text and the images to reach an higher level than a gonzo porn. Unfortunately it seems very difficult for us average males to write decent erotic scenes, so some developers get help from a female writer. I don't want to sound sexist but they are usually much more capable than us in that aspect.

Do you write fiction or make visual novels? How do you get feedback on your work?

That's why I've been surprised to see how popular visual novels are. I would have guessed the most popular games would be action games with lots of blood and sex. But the responses I'm seeing for important features are more on the sensual/intimate side.

I like to make the daz images. I wanted to share them so put them in a renpy vn. Sadly I am not much of a writer so my work is not that out there. I have a development thread on the forum to get feedback from anyone who feels like sharing. I made 2-3 k renders before I wrote a story to go with them. Much better at the image making now. Hard not to want to redo everything.

I think there are probably several different types of readers. But when reviewing the threads of the most successful games they seem to also be the best written. I think your responders, like me, are people who feel disappointed by 3 render sex scenes that doesn’t create a connection. i suspect as people who are choosing to read vn’s as their medium for arousal are also crating visual images which more evocative writing allows for.

There is a gap between what dudes want and what they can produce. Culturally all of the messaging aimed at dudes about sex is basically "put your dick in something as fast as possible, that is the good part". Most don't have the experience with eroticism do pull it off in a story. The dudes who find their way to long form erotic content are here because short hits of tits and ass doesn't get the job done. They want proper eroticism, they just don't know how to make it.

2 - 3 thousand renders?? Wow yea that sounds like a lot of good practice so the newest renders are probably a lot better than the first ones. Have you considered collaborating on projects? I'm sure there's good writers on here that you could probably team up with.

Yea, either the writing has to be good to make the 3 render sex scene worth it, or the game needs to cutout all the grinding just to get to the scenes.

I would love to find a writer or editor to work with, but I suspect I couldn’t produce on the schedule a collaborator would be looking for. My job is pretty full time so I am most weeks only doing an hour or so of the rendering. I’m expecting I will be far enough along to post more of my game for review Sunday. I am hoping to get feed back and make corrections before is send it to the last edit update list to be torn apart.

update is now up.

You could post in the Recruitment & Services sections. There's definitely writers available but the one's I saw were paid. I'll also check out your game after you post the update.

You'll find someone, I'm getting into ren'py coding and I'm coming up with ideas for games but I can't do any artworks myself so if I ever want to release something I'll need to find someone to partner up with me. I also don't spend that much time on it so you're not the only one with a limited schedule, there's going to be someone for you to work with.

As for the topic at hand, games need choices, MORE choices. There are so many times where I play a VN and I go through line after line of dialogue and the game doesn't let me decide on anything, I personally don't like kinetic novels and a lot of VNs feel like them because of the lack of choices or they don't really allow you to decide where to take the plot because the game wants to take you through a certain path and I understand branching and adding more options is going to take more work but sometimes it is necessary. I guess I'm used to games letting me decide stuff, I play stuff like Shadowrun and text adventures and I feel a lot of these games need to let the player decide on more things, even if it's just flavor text.

I think that sums it up for the majority of games i played.

Way too many are not playable with one hand and I genuinely think this merits consideration :p

I also think that, while build-up is important, it also shouldn't take an hour for a porn game to get to the porn.

It's like good horror writing. On one hand, you want time to get to know and care for the characters. On the other, most people still want something to hook them early on, so there'll be a little action in the first chapter before pulling back to focus on exposition. It's not just for instant gratification, it helps you get a feel for how much you'll actually enjoy the "meat" of it all.

There is no such thing. A game is usually classified by having mechanics or loops that keep the player entertained and engaged, which has nothing to do with specific features at all. Your game can be filled with lots of features that wont mean a thing if your core design sucks.

For novel styled games your audience is as diverse as any reader of a book. Less is often better in those cases, as every single extra feature will somehow repel a certain fraction. If the story is good no one will blame the dev for a lack of visuals. If the visuals are great but the story sucks a large group will probably complain. Again - your audience is diverse which is why these kinds of questions cannot be seriously answered, unless you define who your actual audience is.
