It was just an elective in my high school. You had to pick a language, but it was just one of the options. I doubt it's even offered before college anymore (I don't know this, but ...).In my time, remember I'm old as dust, Latin was mandatory in 2nd grade High School (15y.o.) for everyone. Then you wouldn't see Latin for the rest of your education if you chose the STEM or the Socio-economic paths. You only see it again in the Humanistic (getting ready for degrees in History, Philosophy, etc.) and Social paths (for degrees in Law, Medicine, etc., and for people allergic to maths).
I said "my time". Just as a clarification, Latin was already a dead language then
