I feel the same way, but at first, I usually pick something with good renders, then I end up staying for the story
Yea same. A paradigmatic example is Freshwomen, where I tried it a while ago cuz visually it's pretty amazing, but once u start to play it, the story is such a joke that it's untenable to continue playing (also the MC's overexaggerated and stupid facial expressions were extremely grating)

This isn't meant as self promotion. I happen to like the discussion and be a dev as well. Although my game is currently only up to chapter 2 and it is AI art, I wonder if that's a factor in your search for reality? I know AI art can be quite dividing here :), although my main focus is on the romantic/mystery story line and less on the visuals. I wonder what your thoughts are. Secrets in Focus.

Chasing Sunsets is a personal favourite as well. The art was amazing and the story was great too. I liked how they limited the number of LI's to keep the realism in check.

If you had to choose between a great story and horrible visuals, or the other way round?
For me, an engaging story (preferably at least somewhat realistic) always comes first. The next thing I look for - interesting LIs, both personality-wise and good-looking, I mean. Even if the story isn’t great, I can still enjoy a game if I really connect with some of the characters.

Visuals are probably the last thing I consider. I can play with mediocre or even rough art if the story hooks me. Now & Then is a good example, visuals aren’t exactly its strong point, but narrative kept me going.

That said, it’s all subjective. What one person finds engaging, someone else might find boring. Take Chasing Sunsets (the one you mentioned), - top-tier art for sure, but the story felt extremely dull to me. There were a few girls I liked a lot, but none of them are main LIs, so it just didn’t click (I still finished it though just not from my 1st attempt).

I got side tracked a bit :), anyway, yeah, for me, art is definitely not the main factor, story is.

Haven’t actually played a game that uses AI visuals yet, maybe Secrets in Focus will be the first one .

And yeah, if I had to choose, I’d go with story over visuals for sure. I won’t name any titles, but I’ve Alt+F4’d a few games that looked amazing but just couldn’t pull me in story-wise.

So yeah… visuals are nice, but a good story always wins in the end.

I agree with the rest here. I will sometimes not even play a game that looks good, just because the story doesn't interest me. I'm more into realism, so that limits the game I play a bit.

But no matter how good the visuals are, it's the story that needs to keep me interested. Indeed usually the case of the visuals got me play, the story got me to stay. That's for me with 'City of Broken Dreamers'. The visuals were really good, I couldn't care less about the story. I ended up uninstalling after a few chapters.

I'm curious as to what you think of the game.

Depraved Awakening was one of the first AVNs I played and I really enjoyed it, so when I saw the same dev had made City of Broken Dreamers, I figured I had to give it a shot.

I’m not really into fantasy or sci-fi themes though, so I went in a little skeptical.
Ended up playing maybe one or two chapters before moving on .

Glad you put Domino Beach. I had remembered it after I had already made a few comments so didn't want to spam lol. Also Move the Chains as well, tho I haven't yet got around to playing it (have it downloaded).
Move the Chains is great solid story, great visuals, interesting characters. Definitely worth a try if you're not playing anything else

And if you are already playing something right now. What game is it?
I ran out of stuff on my list, so I’m fishing for new recommendations

Currently playing Broken Promises haha! I remember the other day I mentioned I was gonna check it out and yea I'm rlly liking it so far. I was in the middle of a first play through of a few games (Fog of War, Grey Dream, Leaving DNA) so I'll get back to those after.

Honestly I'll prob check out the new Formula Zero update next. Mentioning this cuz I saw u listed it as one of ur top games, but eventually gotta get around to the Finding Cloud 9 update too. You've def played these but I did recently start b.a.d. and Intertwined (kinda daunting cuz they're both so big) too. And Bare Witness haha. Ik, ADHD brain lol. Also gotta play Dreamland and Elmwood University sometime, which I both have downloaded. The Missing Part too. Eagerly awaiting updates to Yesterday's Crossroads and especially Unbroken though.

But damn, I was gonna suggest Getting Intimate, as maybe you hadn't played that yet, but I just checked the thread and u have lol. Also saw what u previously said about the Move the Chains interface and yea the UX rlly is atrocious. Maybe that's why I put it on pause haha.

Well, I haven't seen you mention The Power of Truth, so maybe I can still be of some help. Still in pretty early stages, but is interesting enough so far. Also a relatively new game, Power, but I liked the initial release enough that I'm keeping an eye on it

I actually haven’t played Formula Zero yet. Gonna add it to my list.

And yeah, I get what you mean about B.A.D. being a bit daunting. I played it way back when it was still in the early stages. It was one of my first AVNs ever, and I didn’t even know about this forum yet. I was subbed on Patreon back then and waiting for every update was brutal
So honestly, having all that content ready now is a huge advantage.

I’ll check out The Power of Truth, the screenshots look great so I’ll add it to my list.
And Power I’ve already played, just haven’t posted it in this thread yet.

Formula Zero
formulazero-02.jpg

I really enjoyed Formula Zero, it’s an interesting and fun AVN.
As someone who’s been watching F1 my whole life, that setting makes it even more appealing for me.

The relationship with Emma is definitely my favorite part. At first, I thought she was the MC’s girlfriend, and finding out they were just “good friends” actually made me even more curious to see where things go from here. So yeah, Emma is 100% my favorite LI.

The other LI’s didn’t stand out to me too much yet, except for Viviane. Maybe it’s the mystery around her… or maybe just because she looks great.

Really looking forward to seeing how the story develops in the next updates. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

This game has an absolutely amazing start, and I really appreciate that the story is something original and dives into the world of F1. Emma is incredible, I can't wait to see how it develops
