I would like come assistance with figuring out why there are black smudges appearing on this girl's forehead. Any ideas what causes this? Also, any advice on rendering in general would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to use a slider to reduce the hair cap in the X and or Y by a percent or two to shrink only the hair on the head and it will hide the black sections into the model body or if you have no sliders for that, scale the hair down to 99% (or lower). The reason you see that is because this particular models head is slightly smaller than the generic Genesis 2/3/8 Female head. FYI, a lot of models modify the head size so you see this often.

Just select the hair, go to parameters - Actors - Adjustments and check if there are Forehaed width, height, etc...and move the sliders 1% by 1% untill it's fixed.
This can also come from the ligthing, just change the lights.

And the last and FIRST thing you should do, is to center the character in the scene, when the character is far from the center of the scene, this problem ALWAYS happen.

Thank you for the feedback. That seems to work.

Is there a lighting type that is best to use? I used two "point lights" in this scene and placed them both in front of her spaced apart.

Try searching for "three light setup in DAZ" to get a ton of tutorials on how to create good lightning for your renders. Basically you should use three lights in your scene: The "KEY" light which is the main light highlighting the most important part of your picture, the "FILLER" to reduce harsh shadows (also from the front but from a different angel than the key light), and - this is optional but I highly recommend to use it - a "KICKER" light which usually is somewhere in the background to create some highlights on the edges of your model(s) to make them stand out from the background.

But of course, that all depends on the scene you're rendering. Some scenes require a different setup, the three point light setup is mainly for great portrait/body renders.
