Are Defense cards broken? What are they supposed to do?

Defense cards are working as intended, as far as I can tell.

When damage is received or your deck is made to discard/delete cards, these Defense cards can sometimes take the hit instead of your more valuable cards. It is not a guarantee that they are the ones lost, and they can be drawn too. If drawn they can be used to draw another card from your deck for just 1 mana.

Yes I didn't get the whole Cards are HP at first, I thought it had a shielding mechanic like other card games.
Tingles are the better Defense cards since that doesn't cost mana.
