Newton and the Apple Tree is a good VN, mostly because it presents some rarely seen concepts in the medium. This a title that does no real wrong (or anything amazing for that matter), but tries really hard to diverge, and separate itself from the traditional recognizable model. As far as I'm concerned it was successful, but they (Laplacian) didn't find the "winning ticket", until Cyanotype Daydream.
Positive:
- The setting. Let's forget science fiction, and the gender of historical characters, there aren't that many VN's taking place in 17th century England. It's true that the title is not interested in any sort of proper representation, but it does allow for some interesting scenarios
- 1 unique heroine - It's a Loli, with perverted old man voice acting, a mad scientist/witch, who loves potatoes, and doesn't know the meaning of the word restraint. I'm counting it as a positive.
- Movies - Newton and the Apple Tree has more movies than the usual VN. Without spoilers, they are eccentric, and definitely count as original. Whether you will appreciate them is a different question.
- Nice comedy, and slice of life - It's very cozy and lighthearted. Try picturing a situation where you drop apples close to Newton, and you get "fluff" that other VN's could never produce.
Negative:
- The main problem is the pseudo-science, and mixing things like quantum theory, many worlds interpretation, impossible technology, time paradoxes, and real world history, to make things fit. Knowledge is knowledge, but the explanations they come up with make for very dull entertainment.
Score: Newton and the Apple Tree is a 7/10, and a good recommendation, if you are looking for a different VN. Just keep in mind that this mention, is pretty much the only thing this has going for it, and you need to put value in said difference, if the title is to shine.
(Check the h-scene tags, a couple are unexpected, for this kind of VN)
