Review for Demo 2025-04-30]
Well, I decided to try it, since the only other review was from a few versions back. Man, I should have just trusted that review. This just fails as a game IMO.
OK, this has decent to good character models (though the painted on one NPC clothing is a bit of a bad thing IMO). The scenes that I bothered to find are also decent.
Then there's the "gameplay". It seems to be intended to be like an old Resident Evil or Silent Hill game., you get lost in a weird forest on an island, then get captured by mutant cannibals (I think).
The first challenge is trying to interpret a simple map into the route through a forest. Unfortunately, every path except the correct one isn't the expected (to me at least) dead end, maybe a jump scare, but an instant game over. The game the resets to the start, giving you the same tool tips every time.
Next up you're in tunnels, which are rather dark. You do get a flashlight, which then flashbangs you by being really bright and there also being mist that it reflects off. The flashlight key is also right next to the "emote" key, and tapping the emote key causes you to get stuck in that animation until it runs its course, burning the flashlight battery. A little wandering, some simple puzzles, and running from the first enemy and I get caught in another instant loss trap. I then get reset to the beginning of the tunnels.
I didn't realize that it didn't take the safe room, limited save points of the games it was (likely) inspired by and there's a manual save system. I quit at that point, because I don't think it's worth the annoyance and frustration of trying to figure out the way past the enemies you can't fight to maybe find scenes and enjoyment through the annoying design decisions.
