This Review is based on version 0.863 TF Edition
No Haven is a slave management game in which you play the leader of a band of slavers. You directly control your slaver, give orders to the slavers who work under you, purchase upgrades for your encampment, and of course capture, train, and sell slaves.
Condensed Review
Pros:
- Good writing for assignments
- Wide variety of assignments each with multiple outcomes
- Interesting and detailed setting
- Wide variety of character races, traits, and aspects
- Highly customizable character creation
- Lots of advancement options for your encampment
- Art fits writing
Cons:
- UI can be overwhelming and confusing until you get used to it
- Stiff limits for character advancement (PC, slavers, and slaves)
- Writing for slaving training, and sex actions (but not so much in assignments outside of your camp) is very limited and repetitive
- Kinds of available slave trainings are very limited (e.g. you can specifically train slaves in blowjobs, but not anal, vaginal, sextoys, footjobs, threesomes, etc.)
- In game guide/FAQ has a lot of info, but neglects to give key character advancement info, such as limits to how many traits or aspects a character can get
- Art lacks variety
- Slow saving times (for me 10-15 seconds) slower loading times (45-60 seconds)
Long Review
Character creation
character creation gives you a lot of options. You start by choosing your gender (Male, female, futanari) and whether you want to go with a scenario exclusive character, promoted slaver, fully random character, or just pick your gender and go from there. Just choosing your gender gives you the widest race options. Depending on what you selected, you may be stuck with one character background or have multiple options. After selecting your background you can choose to stick to a pre-set of traits or go fully custom.
When doing a fully customized character, you are a given a pool of trait points to spend and a wide variety of traits to choose from. Most races can get some traits at no cost. You can get extra trait points by taking negative traits. There seems to be some variation between races in terms of how many trait points are in your pool. Draki get a pool of 14 trait points, can take up to 2 negative traits, and can take up to 9 positive traits total.
Core gameplay
You start the game with a rudimentary encampment, your PC, and a few underling slavers. Right clicking character names opens up choices to examine the character, talk to them, etc. Right clicking your PCs portrait opens up choices relating to encampment upgrades, assignments, the in game glossary/FAQ, and stats; you can also end the day from here. Right clicking your name gives you access to a few more options like setting camp rules and going on personal assignments that only the PC has access to.
Assignments: Assignments are missions that you can send yourself or other slavers on. These each have a type, duration, required number of slavers (some assignments require one or more slaves as well), a risk rating and information on what your odds of critical success, success, failure, and disaster are as well as what your rewards for success might be (gold, supplies, slaves, slavers, new opportunities, etc.). It also shows which character traits/aspects influence the likelihood of these outcomes and will update their odds of occuring as you select characters for the assignment (E.G. If "Agile" is listed under success and you select a character with the "Agile" Trait the odds of a success for this assignment might rise from 35% to 40%). This is a lot of info to take in. It took me a while to be able to read and understand it effectively.
Assignments take multiple days to complete and are only available for a certain number of days before they expire. Be warned, some assignments can result in character injury on a disaster or failure, or even losing a character permanently (the latter typically only medium risk or more dangerous assignments). It's generally safer to have your PC stay at camp. After the initial batch, most assignments have to be found. This is typically done through scouting assignments, but there are also camp upgrades that unlock NPCs who occasionally give you word of new assignments at the start of a new day. The writing for assignments does an effective job of illustrating interesting tidbits of setting info via detailed description of locations/cultures and narration of events.
Slave training: To train slaves right click the slave's name and select "personal assignments". Your training options for slaving are pretty limited, although there are a few interesting ideas like using the addictive traits of 'shakko' (Orc cum). Some of your options have multiple levels of training (e.g. basic and advanced obedience training). If training is successful the slave's value increases and you gain access to more advanced trainings (if available) Typically you start with obedience training, move onto blowjob training, and finish with bimbo training. Healslut training results in slaves that are good to keep around camp to reduce recovery time from injuries. Sissification training lets you convert male sex/gender slaves into sissies, although advanced sissification training requires altering their bodies with the Biomancy trait (which is really rare and I recommend taking in character creation if you want to use it). Endurance training can be done multiple times, but adds little to slave value. Unfortunately a wide variety of trainings for various sex acts/ slave types don't exist in No Haven. I did not find any way to train slaves in anal, vaginal, toys, footjobs, bdsm, or threesomes, nor did I find options to train courtesans, cat/ponygirls, Maids, etc. Biomancy does let you partially customize the physical appearance/traits of slaves: You can enlarge/shrink breasts, cocks, and asses, lengthen tongues, increases sensitivity, etc. Unfortunately the options to change sex or race are currently not accessible.
The info on how to sell slaves is sort of buried. You sell slaves via "slaving assignments" or "opportunities". These kinds of assignments don't expire over time. Opportunities are discovered via other assignments and vanish after completion. The Dreadsea Coast has a repeatable assignment called "Whores for the Whoremakers". this pays a flat, low, rate that is not increased by the slave's value/training, but it's by far the easiest method of selling a slave (but it comes with the risk of your characters getting enslaved on a disaster). There's also a hidden auction. If you find it, you can try to sell a slave there once every two weeks for huge profits.
Advancement
Character Advancement in No Haven is focused on exp, leveling up, traits, and aspects. There are no stats in this game. Traits add bonuses to certain kinds of assignments and Aspects seem to be enhanced versions of traits. You gain separate kinds of XP for every kind of assignment (marauding, diplomacy, etc.) . When one of these levels up you get a one time bonus (new slaver or misc bonus for the next successful assignment of that type) and you can right click the PCs name to "level up" and add one new trait or aspect. There seems to be a hard a limit to the number of positive traits a character can get (I'm guessing 9 like in character creation), but it's possible that this limit only applies to traits gained via level up (other ways to get new traits include biomancy and certain assignment outcomes). I did not see any limits for aspects mentioned in game, but the external wiki states that each character has a 5 aspect limit. Slaver underlings can also level up occasionally, but I'm not sure how their experience works (and I did not see an explanation in game).
Overall this feels very limiting. You can max out a PCs traits/aspects in under an hour, but still feel like you've barely scratched the surface of the game. On the other hand your encampment has its own advancement which is fortunately far more robust. You can buy upgrades that bolster morale for your slavers, lower the amount of supplies each member of the camp uses each day, occasionally give you new assignments, increase the likelihood of critical success for a particular kind of assignment, and speed the recovery of "broken" status slaves. Each of these costs a certain amount of gold and has multiple levels. Some also require a slave of a certain value or higher.
Aesthetics
There is no music in this game. There are no animations. It uses still images, typically one per assignment or event. The images mostly fit the event in question and there is variety between different kinds of races/sexes, but very little within them. A majority of the images with female/futa characters feature breasts on the large to huge end of the spectrum (even if the character in question has small breasts). As I touched on elsewhere the U.I. is very text heavy and it might take a long time to parse before you get used to it.
Overall
I had some fun with this as a management game. I did not find it very arousing. I enjoyed the deep character creation options, the advancement of my encampment, and exploring the world through finding different assignments and achieving different results for them. I would have enjoyed it more if character advancement did not feel so limited, If there were more slave training/slave use options and if there was more variety, in terms of writing and images, for slave training/sex scenes. If you play this game I highly recommend reading the in game tutorial and guide/FAQ as well as the external wiki.
