Noob question about mods, patches and updates

Hi there...
I'm fairly new to this adult games thing, very new to the renpy format.. and very new to playing games that are still in development or have fan made content.

That said, I see a lot of patches, mods and such being mentioned, but I have found nowhere exactly how those all work, hence my following questions:

1) how does one install a patch on a downloaded game? (I am thinking incest patch to do away with the proliferation of horny landladies or a patch that fixes dialogue or a bug).
2) how does one install fan made content? and when should one do so? after playing the game and saving it at the end? before playing it altogether?
3) say I download a game from here, or from the patreon page if I can get it more advanced than it is here.. and in a couple of months an update comes out..
does it only add content? does it alter the existing content from the prior version? how should I install that? and can I just install the new version and expect it to find my saves from the prior version or do I have to port it from one to the other? and how do I go about doing that?

as a sidenote..is there a generic convention to the V.0.1.2.43 or whatever other number of choice... the version indication? does the first cipher indicate a completed game or chapters? does every developer use his own choice of codification as to what version they are putting out and naming, or is there some sort of Dewey system analogue to understand at what stage of completion a game might be by it's suffix?

Patches and mods should have instructions nearby, usually. And it depends on the game engine, for Ren'Py things usually go in the "game" folder. Take the Radiant patch on LewdPatcher on for example...

Version numbers do depend on the developer. Although. 0.1.2 might mean first version of the game, with two small updates tweaks or fixes. Again look at Radiant for it's change log.

2. Like said most if not all patches/mods/other savefiles have a install instruction
3. patches/mods/savefiles usually are posted with what version of it is compitable with. Regarding saves being able to be loaded in the future; expect the worst all the time with every game update that the saves will fail, you'll be relieved when they work, considerign soemtimes a game gets updated on the early bits with the coding.

Just adding on,
1)with the patches and mod, I might be lucky to find someone may have already put it together with the game, rest would need to be added on. You can find videos on how to do that also.
2) fan made games or art don't usually add onto the develops game, fan made tend to be separate. Coding would be different.
3) some games, with each version the save might work, might not work depend on the change of coding. If it's a popular game, someone or the other will share their saves. U can also find mod that give hints on game, mod that unlock or add a full gallery of scene. Cheat mods and more.
Extra- if u ever want more PC games, u can check up fapnation also of u like. PC games are an abundance online

Very helpful to learn about where to look for instructions--THANKS! I found that not all games with a patch file include instructions. Either that, or I cannot figure out what them mean.

In the page for Demon Boy Saga, I see an incest patch, but the spoiler dropdowns don't give a step by step instruction (Save, copy, paste over, etc.)

Do game creators sometimes include the patch on the newest game update and then delete the old instructions?

Pretty much all renpy games follow the same patching procedure. If it's a ".rpy" file, put it inside the \game folder. {Edit: But yes, devs should make it normal practice to include install instructions in a readme)
