VN - Ren'Py - Completed - Occultus [v0.8] [BC]

4.5+/5 This game is something else.

Story is excellent and interesting, current build 0.61 leaves one wondering what happens next with anticipation until further release. No sidestories unfortunately, but not too much hustle either. Wasn't sure if choices you make matter and will lead to different outcomes, but for the playthrough it did not feel like it. Pacing starts slow and uneventful, but picks up very quick as story progresses.

Some minor elements of economy/sandbox, but they don't fit here at all. Feels like the game should have stayed a novel, without the annoyance of maintaining stats and money (the "grind" is not that bad though, just somewhat repetitive). If creator wanted to implement sandbox and stats, they could have been done better and would be actually interesting to see if they mattered. Example: higher strength training = better vampire skills.

Characters look decent, lightning is a bit weird though. Sadly most of them lack personality aside from the Aunt. Vampire parts are surprisingly well done and should appear way more often.

Scenes are great, and come in variation which was surprising. Now add fetishes in there and it will become a best package. Pacing of the scenes was also very well spaced out where there is no drought of content.

Adding this to the favorites and would absolutely recommend checking this gem out.

This is one of my favorite Ren'Py games, it doesn't have much content yet, but I love it's story, amazing, simply amazing. Most games of this kind end up being abandoned, I hope the dev finishes this one.

love the vampire theme i enjoy fantasy games like this and the mc is hot really enjoying the renders too nice story and good characters one of my favs ben playing since the start its nice to see how much new content is there cant wait too see the full game

Just an average game.
Average renders, average how-to-proceed scenario.
Just behave like a perv, and you should be good.
Plot didn't impress as well.
And again all female characters are just eager to do smth naughty with u.

It was really short but my big issue is the game needs more paths to take and more options, some scenes should have options for the player to decide what they want.

The game is obviously about vampires and the MC being turned into one, the game allows some choices that do matter. There are is more than one ending but i do wish the all girls ending had it so that all the girls that left to do other things would sometimes come by to visit.

Final verdict the game is more like a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Although not completely original (what is these days?), the story is interesting - it didn't seem forced or obtuse. The characters aren't bland but somewhat believable. It is quite rare that i leave reviews/ratings for most games, but I found myself really wanting to keep playing when coming to the end of the current update. The rendered models weren't the most detailed or intricate, but I could appreciate them just the same.

I like vampires and I like being Dominant in my porn games. As you can guess, I've been watching this game closely since release and tried it quite alot. Here is my verdict on what I have experienced in version 0.4.

Story 3/5 -> The story is not that in depth. You are a boy that grew up with mom and sis (later changed because of Patreon but you get the idea) You also meet your Aunt that you have not seen since childhood and she starts giving you a job to clean her place (and shop in the beginning but mostly it's just chores around her house). Later (after some grinding) the story continues for a bit. You could fit the whole main story in about 5 pages in MS Word. You have side-stories, such as sis corruption after you have turned into a vampire, but that's about it for story. Rest are just placeholders until you have enough stats to continue.

Dialog choices 2/5 -> I'm kinda confused about this one to be honest. You have all the choices available, yet few of them actually do something and most are just filler to have some grind before you can actually further the story with other choices. Since you are as well limited by days in the game, it takes some trial and error unless you use walk-through. Then again, if you need a walk-through for the game to reach the "correct" outcome, why have choices in the first place?

Sexual Content+spelling 5/5 -> The spelling is good enough to fool me at least, since English is not my main language. The sexual content though is quite good compared to other 0.4 releases. You can already have sex with more than one person as well as watch some lesbian scene and more (won't spoil too much here).

Domination/bdsm 1/5 -> According to the walk-through given, it is merely a tease to be able to dominate people later in the game. That's why it gets 1 point. However, you are nothing more then a submissive person to your aunt/Mira at this point since you do what they want you to do.

Pregnancy 0/5 -> You are not able to get anyone pregnant as of yet though it might come in later versions.

Overall this means that this game gets 11 points out of 25, resulting in 44% or 3 stars.

I'm not going to lie here, when this game first got introduced I was all for it and couldn't wait with excitement and would've probably rated it 5 stars at the time. However in recent updates I'm getting more and more disappointed since the story is not progressing that fast and it just kinda feels like the game "Absolute Power". Meaning, release just enough so supporters won't complain but not that much to win over doubters. I really hope that I will be proven wrong though.

But then again, this is just my review on this game from what I enjoy. If you think this is the best thing out there, I will not judge you.

Until the latest changes I would have given the game 5 of 5. Hell, if I had played only the new version I might have even given 5 of 5. But I played before and after the big patreon mess and even though I know the dev can't be blamed for it I can't help being reminded of everything anytime I play the new version. And since I hate a just a few things more than censorship I simply can't click the 5 star button. There are also some minor 'issues' that help me justify the 4 star rating for myself. So now to the actual review:

I like the graphics. Ever since DMD I have played A LOT of ren'py games (got hooked thanks to that game^^) so I know there are better renderings out there but I still like them a lot. Big plus here from my side.
One negative aspect regarding graphics: The characters, especially the "sister", seem to change haircolor back and forth from one scene to the next. It's not major but still a bit weird.

The story is great so far and I really like the supernatural part. I have always bin a huge fan of vampire movies and games so I was instantly a fan of this one. Then it got combined with this 'family friendly' setting and BAM, you got a great game (get it? family friendly? aaah I'm so funny ... and yes I actually made myself laugh with that joke!)

As always, the long and short of it: I really like the game. Nice setting, nice images, a few minor things that can be ignored. Overall a great game.

The following review is based off my personal experience with playing this Game/Visual Novel... I try to be as brutally honest and detailed as I can, and these are my own opinions and thoughts, from one or more play throughs...

(01/10/2018 - Original Review - v0.36)

Creative and interesting story line in this visual novel/game... Alas, it does have that oh so over used Family Sex stuff...

The visuals are pretty good for both the characters and backdrops... There is no real navigation menu, but you do get multiple text choices for how to proceed through game days once the introduction ends and the grind part of the game begins...

The script is not bad, as I only ran into a couple spelling/grammar errors... The plot is that you play a male protagonist who lives with his mother and sister, and has an Aunt that he runs into while looking for work... His family has a lot of issues with the extended family trying to blackmail and/or control his family, because they owe a lot of money on their home as well as debts created by his deceased father... That is where a lot of the twists come into play, as there is some sort of family feud going on outside of his immediate family... His Aunt, comes to find out, is a vampire with abilities, and the protagonist becomes a willing participant of hers, by working for her in exchange for money as well as being trained in the ways of sex, in order to please her sexually... There are lots of other things also going on, that the protagonist may need to eventually deal with... But this VN/game is still in it's early days of development, so there is more content to come... For now it is mostly relationship grinding, making money, training, and finding out more from his Aunt about the actual world he finds himself a part of...

Overall, it's a very creative story with the whole vampire business, as well as family feud... And even though this one becomes more of a grind type game after getting past the decent introduction, it still has plenty of story depth to go along with the sex stuff, and other mechanics... So far, it seems well balanced and well paced, and I really do hope it stays that way... I couldn't see a way to view the hidden stats of the game, so there really is no way to know how far you've gotten with the grinding, but you do get story progression after only grinding a short bit each time, so that is a plus... I'll definitely check back on this one, once it's gotten a ways further into development, as it shows a lot of promise... And I hope it keeps up with the well balanced story elements...

(03/07/2018 - Review Update - v0.38)

Not a huge amount of content added... Mostly just 2 events between the protagonist and his family members... They reveal to each other, in separate events of course, their true feelings for one another... Plus you learn some things about the protagonists true blood relations, that was unknown before... I suspect this is to remove the Family Sex element in order to comply with new rules being highly enforced by some patron websites... Personally I think there are lots of other ways of crowd funding that don't involve as many restrictions, but some developers are spoiled with using the patron websites, so they are altering their products to comply with the rules...

There was also a fundamental game play change... It's ok, but not sure why the switch was made, as the prior method seemed alright the way it was... But, hey, it's not a huge deal, just odd that it changed... Now, the days progress automatically, with a certain choice list available for each part of the day... Once selected, and after any story text, it moves on to the next part of the day for more choices right off the bat... This does have the side effect of making the grind go by a tiny bit faster... I'm sure different folks will have different feelings about this change, but personally I'm not bothered by it...

That is about it for this update... I still enjoy the story, even with the grind elements, mostly because they are not that horrible in comparison to lots of other grind elements I've seen in other games... The visuals for the new events look decent enough... I still look forward to seeing future updates... I'll probably wait for a couple updates this go around, before revisiting for another review update... To give it time to grow a bit...
