Old West VN Which Period do you like Red Dead Redemption 2 1899 or Jesse James 1866

In which time period would you rather play (Romance, Seduce, and Pleasure the Ladies)?
Red Dead Redemption 2 1899 or Jesse James 1866?
Red Dead Redemption 2 1899, The wild west is almost over.
Jesse James 1866 The James Gang pulled off one of the first outlaw bank robberies of the post civil war wild west.
Or is there a different "Western" date that you like?

A better question, before nailing down a time period, is what story you're attempting to tell. Are you gonna use the old west setting to tell us a western? Is it gonna be one of those MC is obviously the hero and there's an obvious villain westerns, or is it gonna be more of a Shane, where it's more about a guy who wants to put down his guns and stop the killing, but is forced to pick them back up again to defend something he cares about? Or are you gonna use the setting and just make generic life sim number 9046 just the time period is different?

If you are going to write a western, then what kind you're gonna write helps. Something like Shane works better later into the west, as the west itself is starting to die, and gunslingers are no longer the law. But a more black and white, good vs evil western works better at the height of the wild west. And if the setting is just a backdrop for the generic life sim, then it doesn't matter whatsoever.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. It's a character driven story with a few plot branches depending on choices and luck, no heroes in this story (we shoot 'em on sight), it's more of a Visual Novel or similar to the story/dialog parts of the Witcher, not a life sim. Time period and date are nailed down, it's going to start in 1876.
If you had the choice which period would you choose, DarthSeduction? Perhaps this is a moot detail that nobody cares about?

Well, since I'm more into ambiguous stories where good and evil are less obvious, and open to interpretation, I'd have probably gone with something a little later, something where industrialization is reaching the west, and the game would be fighting against that. Especially given what you've come up with, that it's a no heroes in this story type place, because that means that your town is full of outlaws. It makes sense to make them have something to fight, and the best enemy for outlaws is order.

All 3 years listed so far fall roughly around the "wild west" era. RR2 might strictly be considered happening a few years after it came to an end, but it's close enough that not much really would have changed throughout most of the western territories. So there isn't that much of a difference between them unless you want to intentionally include historical characters, events or locations that would make an exact year relevant.

There were more Buffalo in 1866...

Make sure to include one of these in your story. Train robberies are kind of a western staple...

I'm sure there's some 'olde tyme' passenger cars for Daz/Poser somewhere!
There's this one (closest I've found to 'period' so far), but it's in .3ds format:

Myself, I'd love to see someone do a 'Sexy Wild Wild West' game. You know, a James West and Artemis Gordon parody where they fuck those sexy girls, instead of just going to dinner with them at the end of an episode.

As for their porn names, Well Artemis Hardon, not sure what to use for James West...

That may not fit with the story you have in mind though!

Cool, thanks for the links.

Wild Wild West is one of my all-time favorite Western series. There are definitely a few (or maybe one) smooth characters like James West (Robert Conrad), but they are not the MC.

1866 Jesse James Era, more chaos because it was hard for the law to win earlier in the West

The James - Younger Gang, Jesse, Frank, and company are more related to the South, and had little to do with the wild west. They crossed the Mississippi once, and got themselves killed in Minnesota.

you can easily convert 3ds to obj. There's even an online converter for smaller files.

If you find a file that is too big for the site polywog linked to, I use 3ds max I can convert them for you.

They never should have gone north.

I wouldn't worry too much about time period, you will be severely limited by the availability of assets out there. You will have a lot less at your disposal than someone making a present-day slice-of-life game, but you also have a lot of unexplored ground since the few western games here are shit.
