I already feel bad for writing this review for a number of reason. First, I barely played any of the game. Literally only about ten minutes of it, so if someone were to argue that I didn't give it a fair shake, that's a reasonable criticism. Second, I'm a big fan of Overlord. While I haven't read the light novels, I have seen all four seasons of the anime and am working my way through the 70ish chapters of the manga. Third, most of the reviews are pretty positive and my one star review may hurt their rating. That's not to say I don't believe the game deserves it, but still...
So what criticisms could I possibly present after only playing 10 minutes of the game that would justify such a terrible score? That's simple: The writing. I don't know if the author is not a native English speaker or not, but both the spelling and grammar are atrocious, and since this is a story-focused game, those two attributes are paramount. Nearly every single line of dialogue was noticeably flawed. Grammar choices were awkward or incorrect, spelling was a mess, and even the sentence forms were off.
The music was fine and the renders were not particularly high quality but not too distracting, but none of that matters when something as important as the writing is this bad. This could easily be a 3 or 4 star game if the author were to hire an English major, or even just someone who speaks English and graduated high school, to spend a few weeks cleaning up the dialogue. Simply running it through a Spelling/Grammar filter would solve most of the problems I suspect.
After this review I'll be revisiting the game and scrolling through a few more scenes to see if the dialogue improves. If it does, I'll be back to update the review, but the first impression is a decidedly negative one.
