Exactly, that's why side characters shouldn't get that much attention.
Not about this game in particular but more in general, I think 5 or 6 characters with a more in-depth story would be the way. I feel that I lose connection, mix up stories, or even wonder how that side-character got in to the game.
Still think it's one of the best games around, maybe I should just wait until it's finished.

Yes, you can't unlock her house. She does not want to involve Kevin in this, you can bring her to RM instead.
