They did a lot of work and came to the conclusions that keeping up with 2D artwork would be too slow. They switched to 3D cause they can make updates a lot faster. It's possible they'll add small things to the 2D version overtime buteh.

Hope this works out for the dev but the 'first one 2D, second one 3D' into abandoned tag pipeline is like a known true combo. My poor, sweet, tragic Hole Dweller sequel... So sad... This game looks pretty cool really hope the 2D to 3D true combo doesn't claim another victim.
