The first moment in Pokemon Academy Life Forever, I felt like having the Dating Sims that I was never able to get. The characters were all having some deep in them, taking from the manga counterpart plus some originality, the setting was fine enough, the events were fitting with the world and taking my interest.
I really enjoyed it until the fourth week, amazed that some people were able to do so well with otherwise bland Pokemon characters.
It crumbles after that part, feeling that the actual team changed through the writing and the artwork. I took a closer look at the project, it happened that it was abandoned and taken back by another group. They use the 2 weeks already done, and probable the 3rd one in work, then begun to add their bits in it.
I am thankful that they did so, otherwise I would never have played it, but they did butcher it quite a lot.
I must say that even the firsts weeks weren't flawless. The dating sim's part was bare bone and your choice unimpactful. I, actually though that those were faults of the original game that the remake didn't take into account. Having played it since then, I do knows that the dating sim had more than twice the number of events that were actually watchable by playing and your choices changed what pokemon you would get and who would be your friend circle, and club, in the everyday life.
Making the flaws actual flaws of the remake, and not something coming back from the original Pokemon Academy Life.
That being said, I was ready to overlooked them. The game was still fun after all, and completely worthwhile.
Until this fourth week, the moment that the new team had to continue on the content. There sure was effort in it, and they picked it up pretty well, but the brushing off moments just kept on piling up again and again.
One of them is the woke and the sexual openness. That is kind of the same thing, but woke is use for a more limited number of cases usually. Obviously, I am not fan of them but the reason being that you need actual context to make someone gay and doing threesome, that can't just pop out of nowhere otherwise your character is just ruined having background troubles. Troubles that the remake made happen and these instances became more and more.
You can't make a serious character, having a position of responsibility, doing threesome while breaking the rules. You can't make a couple awkward and then make them fucking like rabbits without talking out heir problems. You can't make the Mc, a boy coming from some backwater with no gay relationship, being bi out of nowhere. You can't make an edgy serious guy, who was the son of a feared boss, turning out to have been a whore boy.
Do you feel it? Those are wrong choices.
They do not fit with the picture of the character, it's like taking a punch in the whole face and theses do no bring anything into their background, they just spurn out of nowhere and finish with a "okay".
There were means to make those real. The simple one being the bi Mc that could have realized that he likes a guy going through the character events, but the remake didn't bother doing it. So there is no deep nor reason in it, the only thing they bring is disgust for the character.
There is no sexual content anyway, The sexualization being completely excessive.
The other being that the game got completely story-oriented. That is a hole that many fall in but putting strength in a game doesn't mean making a story in it, even so more that most people aren't able to make a good one.
You can expect that the development is as good as someone butchering character for no reason can do. Having an evil making out every day with her boyfriend in a coffee shop doesn't make it frightening, softening Blue to make him a friend just killed his character, antagonizing Cheren for no real reason feel like a forceful way to make a "tense" relationship, and making a smart character dumbly blind for drama purpose was completely off-putting.
This aspect actually wears on the dating Sims events too, making them uselessly long and boring to the point that I actually was fed up with the character.
The true flaw here, that the original isn't making again, is that the game was supposed to be a dating sim.
Dating sim have some big events, with the content changing depending on who you are going out with. This pattern make it limited on a story level. This isn't a bad thing since the genre is supposed to be played more than one run to go with different characters, and objectives such as battle or contest in this case make a difference in the development.
The remake making it completely story-focused is killing the dating Sims aspect for the worse.
There are obviously others flaws less impactful such as the use of spanish without reason, the growing number of minigames uncompleted, the quizzes that have absolutely no worth pokemon-wise.
Some efforts too with the pokemon anecdote and the add of characters, yet poorly implemented.
But those are lesser instances in the bigger picture.
As a result, I can't really say that I am thrilled anymore by Pokemon Academy Life Forever. The overly focused badly written story just made it tiring and learning that character that I am supposedly to get charmed by are sexual degenerates doesn't help.
