For a game tagged 'Rape' that previews a naked, decapitated body stuffed with a dildo on its main page, Police Gun is surprisingly charming. What I played was a day in the life of a beat cop pornstar. I reported for work, sat through a briefing, did some training at the range, hit the streets on my police issued motorbike (all the license plates are some variation of '69'), stopped speeders, found a body, had lunch, got a hand-job at lunch, stopped a not-so-rapey rape, etc., until I called it a day. I played to the point where you reach your apartment and give the coroner her drugs. Then she leaves because your place is a shithole, and I found myself unable to proceed any further.
This is not a real, complete review. This is version 0.19, the game is still in its infancy, and it's a little cruel for me to judge this game as an overall in its current state. It's too early, and I'd feel like an asshole. But I'll give some early impressions.
This seems like a hearkening back to the Leisure Suit Larry, adult text adventure days, when you'd have a bevy of hot chicks to plow through, and each required a certain item or action to check them off the list. It's all very light-hearted and more than a little goofy. Everyone has 'Gun' in their name. Guntits, Handgun, Gunjobs, Jobsgun, Gunass, the state is Stategun, it's very silly. Someone previously posted a clip from the old Leslie Nielsen show "Police Squad" in the game's thread, and I think that's an apt comparison (in tone, anyway, there are no 'Airplane' style, joke-a-second hijinks going on, it's just goofy).
I already see some of the puzzles coming together. I know I'll need $300 and condoms from the mall to get the escort. I know that Detective Bimbo Guntits will need info on the 'porno serial killer'. You'll probably have to catch your friend Mary on an evening when her boyfriend's not working, and you'll need that new laptop to bang the black chick at reception. Police Gun is very helpful and intuitive in getting you to understand what it wants from you in exchange for giving you scenes of 3DCG characters undressed.
It's design is going to need some work. The layout is a little clumsy, dialogue you have with people just kind of hangs out at the top of the screen until you figure out which thing to click next, and if you guess wrong sometimes a blank box will appear in its place. The game has audio (!) which is cool but a little awkward, especially when your clicking through your rolodex of babes just trying to find the one that has something new to say, and each girl has the same voice and the same response. The dialogue and actions consist of broken English, conversations between characters are crammed together into single paragraphs like a badly edited script and the grammar is an eyesore, but I was never confused as to what had just happened. And again, I don't know, fuck me, it's charming.
Look, for me, this mostly works. It's a Roger Corman movie, or Troll 2, Hard Ticket To Hawaii. When it's shitty, it's shitty in all the right ways, and there's clearly effort put into this, and into doing something different. Not for the sake of being different, but because the dev clearly likes old school point-and-click adventures, and he likes porn, and he wanted to try his hand at merging these things into something he wanted to see. And I can feel that energy in this, and I dig it.
I might recommend removing the picture of the corpse from the previews, though, if that's the only time something of that nature appears in the game. It just doesn't seem indicative of the game's actual tone, and the dev is likely to draw in the wrong crowd. People like me, that see that and go, "Oh boy, excessive cruelty to attractive women merely for my own sadistic enjoyment!" You know, creeps. And yet the actual game so far is very tame and respectful of both genders. Even the rape scene amounts to "He paid for sex, but sex indoors, and he fucked me outside!"
Anyway, that's about all I got. For me, I'm putting a three-star placeholder. For you, this may not equal that. Just know what it is going in. And I hope the dev keeps at it.
