I like trainers, but their "gameplay" is typically nothing but fluff, with very few exceptions.

Overgrown Gensis is a phenomenal game. If that's the expectation you're using for RPG then you have my vote any day. Witch Trainer was great too, but I just couldn't get on board with the new ones.

RPG done right is really strong and feels fantastic, but it's not simple to design and execute on. I cut devs a lot a slack when they release it for that reason. There's just a huge volume of content you have to add just to make the game feel decent, let alone good. Always have my eye out for new releases.

I used to like trainers before, but I have outgrown it. Plus, there's less games in genre that I really like in trainers. I love RPGs, I also have wider control over my character in RPG than trainers. If there's one trainer that I really, really liked, it's gotta be Imperial Gatekeeper, but I don't know if Imperial Gatekeeper is considered a trainer.
