I've seen a lot of folks generalize, quite a bit, when it comes to Adult style Visual Novels and Games with sexual themes included in them... Some folks call them Porn VN's and Games, some call them Erotic VN's and Games... I really feel there is a distinction between the two, even though they can, in some small ways, mirror one another, or you can get a mix between the two, in a given VN and/or game...
If you look at the history of Adult Fiction, you never see Romance Novels referred to as Porn Novels or Porn Books, by the masses... Yet in this day and age, where typical Pornography has taken a huge hold on the Internet and in society as a whole, I feel sometimes that people generalize too often... It would be like taking a movie that was rated R because of some nudity and possible sex scenes and calling it a Porn Movie... You don't see that generalization from anyone other then the morality elite or religious fanatics... So why do we see it so much in the adult VN/Game industry... I think it mostly stems from the lack of understanding, possible ignorance, and/or folks just not taking the time to care... Which is a bit sad, but it happens across the board these days, really regardless of genre... Some folks think in black or white, rather then shades of grey and other colors of the visual spectrum...
For me, typical Porn is what you see when you do an internet search for your favorite sex video... Or when you watch a typical low quality acting Porn Movie, like Deep Throat and so forth... And when I see that same form of low quality story telling, coupled with characters that are, either way over the top, or just eye candy with no real/believable personality, thrown together into sexual encounters back to back to back... Pretty much like what you get in a low budget and poorly acted real life Porn Movies... That is when I typically believe the VN and/or Game I'm playing/reading is nothing but a porn festival... With shallow back to back porn events, that has no ulterior meaning outside of basic masturbation material... When there is no real attempt at entertainment value, beyond that, then it is Porn...
Where as, for me at least, when it is an Erotic Visual Novel and/or game, I expect a nice amount of believable character development and decent story telling... Where the sexual/erotic content is a part of the story telling, a part of the entertainment value, but not necessarily all it has going for it... When you read a full length Romance Novel, sure, the sex scenes are a part of the novels appeal, but the story telling aids in the immersion of those events... To have an emotional attachment, outside of a quick thrill, to what is happening... By telling a good tale, and allowing the reader/player to experience the tale, becoming immersed in the protagonists plight... So when those adult sexual encounters occur, the feeling is more pleasurable, more enticing, and generally more entertaining...
Everyone needs something from these sorts of VN/Games... Sometimes it's as simple as just getting their jollies and moving on... For some they want to experience something more... And for others it might be a mix... But generalizing them all into one category or another is misleading, a majority of the time...
To call everything containing adult sexual content, as being Porn, is a misnomer... There is a Erotic and there is Porn, and there is sometimes a mixing of the two...
Why do I prefer Erotic VN/Games or ones with a mix, typically? Because I usually prefer good story telling along with my sexual encounters or sexual themed scenes... I like good character development, and not super simplified and stereotyped personalities that never change with time... Sure, getting my jollies is a nice side bonus, now and then... But I want to be entertained foremost, and I want it to tell a fun and engaging story along the way... Not a meaningless and poorly crafted porn fest... And just because the visuals might be done well, doesn't mean the VN/Game as a whole is any good at all... I will never rate a VN/Game with a high score, based purely on good visuals... It's the package as a whole, that determines if it has promise or not... If I'm not smiling now and then and/or laughing, or just generally enjoying myself, outside of sexy scenes, then what's the point? I might as well go watch an extremely easy to find real life Porn Vid at that point, if all I wanted was Porn...
