A lot of people ask me why I'm using Kickstarter and not Patreon, which I want to address here.
Please understand this is not a discussion or a debate. I will probably not respond to comments. I know that some people, maybe even most people, will disagree with me. I am old and ugly enough to be OK with that. I actually think there's a beauty to (respectful) disagreement - why should we all walk the same path?
Kickstarter is a business decision I have taken after serious consideration. You do not have to agree or support me, although I honestly hope that posting this will help build trust with some members of the community. If not, well, at least I've been honest with my intentions and ambitions, and that's a hill I will proudly die on.
And if the kickstarter fails, so be it. I'll go back to the drawing board and work out the best way forward. I think Private Dick will still get made - it will just take me a bit longer.
1. On Trust
First off, I know there's a trust problem with Kickstarter. But honestly, I don't think there are many, if any, actual scammers on kickstarter trying to take your money. The reason kickstarters fail is the same reason patreons fail: making games is just really really hard, and it can break people. Even good, talented, experienced people.
I have designed my kickstarter to be as small as possible. I am an experienced developer, probably a older than most adult game devs (?), and I will not let feature creep kill the game. I've planned carefully and with flexibility to ensure I can deliver the project in a couple of months.
2. On Subscriptions
Secondly, some games, projects and artists suit Patreon very well. It's a good deal for backers and creators. Some games continually release new, modular content; while artists can post artwork every month to reward backers. Some people get to eat because of Patreon. This is great!
But my game is a fixed scope, carefully planned story. There is a certain length to the core story and, while there's some optional side content, there's only so much I can and want to do. The game will reach a natural conclusion, and then what happens to my subs? I will not, and will not be accused of, pad out the game just to milk a subscription.
I much prefer the pre-order model that Kickstarter offers - even if that means I have to invest more upfront and be less ambitious with the game's design.
3. On Profit
Finally, when the game is finished I will sell it on digital markets for profit. Backers will have paid much more than the retail value and will get no direct benefit from my profit despite potentially a significant investment. I personally am just not comfortable with that.
So that's it. My project is tightly scoped and guaranteed to return quickly, the content model doesn't suit a monthly subscription model, and I feel icky selling a crowdfunded game for personal profit. Thanks for reading ️

Thanks. It's just how I feel.
I don't at this stage have a discord. I honestly don't know about setting one up, there's a lot I don't like about Discord. I'd rather do community stuff here, on twitter and on kickstarter itself.

NO UPDATE: unfortunately the dev has introduced some new python code that breaks on Android and I do not have the bandwidth to debug and fix it. That means I have to drop this port.

Just played the demo. Gorgeous noir atmosphere, excellent writing. Sin City vibes. Not a fan of sandboxes, but it's not too bad. The one thing this game desperately needs is a smooth jazz soundtrack. Maybe
I'm not a fan of Mr. Steele's sex scenes so far. Random well-off women aggressively pursuing no-name losers like him is unrealistic and off-putting. Still, I'm here for the story and the sex scenes are largely ignorable so I don't really have too much of a problem with it.

There will absolutely be a jazzy soundtrack. This has been planned since the start I didn't realise how important it would be to players. I thought most players, like me, play with the sound off. Turns out I am very wrong about that and I'm working on it: I've got a guy working on it and I'm hoping to have at least one track in the build by the end of the month. I'm very excited for this!
The sandbox will be quite lightweight, it's not going to be heavy sim. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about money for example. Not for everyone, of course
I'd be the first to admit that the sex scenes kind of spring up out of nowhere. That's partly because I've gotta start somewhere, and partly because the demo's timeline is compressed to get more smut into the build. I can tell you that every sex scene happens for a calculated reason, but those reasons have yet to be revealed.

This tells the Steam algorithms that people are interested, helps connect Private Dick to the other great adult games on there, and when I'm ready to release will help increase my chances of getting onto the front page listings for a few precious minutes.

The game hasn't been updated for six months so things are pretty quiet around here. That's on me.
I'm working on a new demo and early access build at the moment, which I'm hoping to put out in March/April but I don't know yet. I don't have much dev time right now so things move slowly
Sex scenes are interactive and have movement, but don't use what I'd call proper animation.

The new demo is fully voiced and comes with an original soundtrack. It has one explicit CG and a bit of teasey stuff. It follows right after the old kickstarter demo but is designed to be totally standalone - just should be able to jump right in.

Vanilla doesn't have to be boring. Vanilla is actually DELICIOUS - have you tried it?
The kinks are vanilla, yes, but I push the dialog, art and content of every scene to be interesting and entertaining. As the story deepens there will be increasingly weird and optional stuff creeping in around the edges
I love vanilla! But my time spent on this site has introduced me to other flavors...
