A rare three star where I actually still fully recommend that you play it. Problematic Subjects is not a game that is trying to be anything large, or truthfully, anything super original. What it actually is, is pretty solid, with a few awful caveats.
The animations in the game are good, and the general progression and likes/dislikes system for scenes and characters adds a level to the gameplay that makes it more interesting to play than its' inspirations (mainly, Barely Working.) I like the ongoing mini-stories for each character and seeing new dialogue with every day that passes in the game.
However, there are some immense flaws in the game that hurt my overall enjoyment a LOT. Particularly, the energy and the "true end" systems. If you don't play your first session of Problematic Subjects perfectly, you're forced to restart the game from DAY 1, losing all of your skills and upgrades and playing through the same exact storylines again. This game is... not that replayable. I never made it to the infirmary level.
Additionally, if you ever run out of energy mid-run, your day ENDS INSTANTLY and you are FORCED to the next day. The game's storylines do not account for you missing any content in a day, so if you ever fuck up (or get screwed over, like I was) then you lose out on the progression of all the characters for that day with no way of repeating it. I was absolutely scammed by the energy system, because I recognized that you gain more energy as your horny bar levels up. Turns out, if you expend your energy on a skill that WOULD level your horny bar up, you DON'T GET THE ENERGY before you get game-overed.
My last minor nitpick; The game has too much downtime. Problematic subjects has fake waiting in-between each scene in order to simulate the students taking time to reach your office. It's pointless, and is riddled by useless emails that are either a nod to or a complete rip-off of the emails you get in Barely Working. The difference between the emails in Barely Working and Problematic Subjects is that they actually serve a gameplay purpose in Barely Working, slowing down your progress and influencing if certain characters would show up. Problematic Subjects has no mechanics behind the emails. They're ONLY there to fill time and slow down the game.
Overall, the core game, animations, and story of Problematic Subjects is solid, but my main gripe is that the game is forcibly lengthened for no reason, making you feel as if you're wasting your time. The game does this by forcing you to wait around for students and read useless emails, or make you replay the game altogether just to see the end content. With very small tweaks, this game could have been a 4.5 star game for me. Unfortunately, it's more like a 3. All that said, I still recommend you give it a go. It's better than a lot of the other slop on this website.
