Quantum Loop (0.5.1)
Over the years, the idea of being stuck in a time loop has been used time and time again. You change something in the loop and the butterfly effect in the world your main character comes from is immediate.
STORY
You wake up in McWallis Medical Clinic not remembering what happened. A blonde nurse, Patty, wakes you up to ask you whether you realize who you are and what year it is. You can’t remember and that’s where the craziness starts.
The story is an absurd power fantasy where a future technological invention allows Wilkin Samfarmer, director of research at a science company, to swap identities with a young man from a different timeline unbeknownst to the subject. Waking up in the hospital, Wilkins eventually realizes his identity and tries to manipulate the situation in order to gain personal benefit.
The meat of the story is the main character going through repeated sessions of the same day in order to find the next step in his plan. Skipping through the same parts is easy enough as pressing a button, but skipping content does feel like a
GRAPHICS
Graphics in the game are often doll-like and comical. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously with overgrown body parts and exaggerated expressions, which work well to bring humor to the game. That humor is often childish and sexual in nature. The slightly cartoonish look does add to the wacky style of the game, making suspense of disbelief easier to manage.
Most of the game takes place in the hospital. It looks good, but nothing too outstanding. The few scenes that play out in different places are generic, but believable enough to not stand out. One big plus is the continuity of people’s looks as we go through loops from different moments. Let’s hope the game does more of that in future updates. The more intimate scenes are exaggerated, but fun nonetheless.
GAMEPLAY
The game is a visual novel with choices, but those choices don’t really matter at this moment. Eventually the main character learns about his situation and while the gameplay doesn’t change, you start to run through segments faster in order to get to the outcomes you want to have.
The flashforwards are a nice bonus, but don’t actually change anything to the active gameplay. It’s still a Kinetic VN at heart. Quantum Loop doesn’t have a whole lot of meat. There is supposedly a sandbox version of the game (which didn’t run for me), but at this point I can’t find a reason why this story needs to be in a sandbox unless you change a few things and add a bunch of extra conversations and easter eggs.
OVERALL
Quantum Loop, at this point, really doesn’t offer enough to be called a game. Some of the scenes are funny, but most of it is repetitive plays of the same scene until the game lets you progress into the next one. It’s smart from a story perspective, but not always as fun experiencing. Hopefully the game finds a good balance between humor, backtracking and quantum shenanigans in order to stay relevant until the full release. It seems like the game’s developer is up to the task of creating a fun, yet interesting mix of play.
