Rename the MC

When given the option do you rename the main character, or leave their name as the default?

In most games I use the default name, unless it's a male MC with a name I don't like, in which case I might rename him to my own name.

For me it all goes back to the self-insert thing. I'm the type who tends to self-insert as the MC of a story as much as possible, so renaming the MC can be a tool to increase immersion. I guess you're not the self-inserting type.

I always use the same name, which is not my own.

in medieval fantasy I might leave the default name if it's a good one.

in most games I rename all characters I can because the defaults don't fit the characters at all.

How do you decide when a name is real and thought out, instead of thrown in?

Not 100% fool proof, but if it's a common name, it's usually just thrown in there. (tbh, most character names seem to just be randomly chosen instead of thought out.)

I usually rename in games where I play a male MC. Female/futa MCs I usually just go with the default. The reason is when I try to self insert my "male name" into a Female/futa character it just doesn't sound or feel right.
Even though if anyone knew my "male name" it's pretty androgynous by design.
