Renpy saves not auto migrating in games on new laptop.

I got a new laptop a couple of months ago. I transferred my saves from my old laptop into the new ones appdata/roaming/renpy but every time I open a new download of a game, my saves don’t transfer to the game. I have to physically copy/paste my saves from my appdata to the games local save folder. This was never an issue the last time I upgraded laptops.

I figured maybe renpy isn’t able to access my appdata, but realized that couldn’t be the case as when I make new saves in game, a save is added to my appdata saves. I should also mention I installed a second ssd onto my laptop but I don’t think that has anything to do with it because it doesn’t make a difference which ssd I launch the game on, it doesn’t the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Permissions issue? Maybe it doesn't have the necessary permissions because it's a foreign folder to this laptop? Right click > properties > security, and check to see if it has full control.

It looks like my appdata save folders have full control, however, the actual downloaded game folder does not. You think that could be the problem? If so I assume I’ll just have to go into each individual game folder and change that and hope it saves that setting for each game update after?

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

I wonder, do the fact that Ren'Py is not authorized to write in the game directory, can be the reason why Ren'Py do not write in the game directory?

If it's a write permissions issue for whatever reason (maybe copying the folder over?), you can just right click the RenPy folder in AppData & uncheck Read-only in the General tab. It should prompt you if you want to apply to all subfolders too, so you don't have to do it manually. Because this really does sound like some kind of permission issue, where the engine isn't allowed to write in its preferred location so it defaults to its secondary, the game's own folder. If nothing works, try renaming the RenPy folder in AppData, then running a RenPy game and making a save to see if a new one's created. If it is, simply use it and copy the files of the backup one inside.

My appdata renpy folder did have read only checked so this might be it, however it looks like my previous laptop was also set to read only and didn’t have this issue so I’m curious if that will be the problem.
As I mentioned my games will automatically save in appdata, just not automatically migrate to my games save folder when I open a new update of a game.

Huh... well, either try running a game with admin to see if that changes anything in case it truly is a permissions issue, otherwise maybe this could have something to do with the game's persistent files, there's one in each game save folder. I think they track the game's location too aside from other things such as achievements and game progress, and perhaps the issue is that there's some kind of path mismatch? Can't help you fixing that though. Just something I'd check to make sure.

but OP already stated several times that the games create new saves in appdata just fine - so not a write-permission issue?
It is the not reading the old saves that I understood to be the problem.

sorry, OP, I do not know Ren'Py.
