Return to Roots [v0.2] is a kinetic "novel" made with AI-generated art, where inconsistency and weird hands & fingers jump out at you during its 5-minute runtime. Breast size, weight, eye colors, jewelry, and other supposedly unique markers of the stepmom change almost in every render.
The story is a classic one: you assume the role of a guy who comes to a "new" home where his stepmom lives after an incident that is never explained. Grammar and wording in the descriptions are perfect, almost too perfect, which makes me suspect an artificial hand was involved in that part as well. There's nothing wrong with that when it’s done right, as it is here. But the pacing? Not so much. I assume since this is just the 0.2 version, the developer wanted to showcase what he/she could do with the tools they have. The result, however, is not something I’d consider worth investing my time in... And I mean no ill will or offense by saying that.
With all due respect to anyone trying to create something with the resources they have, I want to generalize my thoughts on the new trend of making kinetic novels with AI, not just Return to Roots. My personal view is mixed when it comes to these kinds of creations. It’s a double-edged sword. With what AI can do now, creating games like this is undoubtedly easier (even though the broken details in the AI illustrations, like messed-up fingers and inconsistencies, become glaringly obvious the more you scrutinize them). It will only get easier over time. This opens up opportunities for people with great stories in mind, but without the artistic skills, to bring their ideas to life, which is amazing.
That said, it also gives people without talent in storytelling or the ability to craft a unique narrative the same opportunity. As we all know, not everyone has the ambition or the dedication to handcraft true art or give it the attention it deserves in terms of storycraft and creativity. When you work tirelessly on something, when you pour your heart into the art you’re creating by hand, you’re more likely to ensure the direction you take it and the story you attach to it will be as good as you envision.
I hope my outlook on this doesn’t dissuade anyone from working hard on what they set their minds to. I wish the best for the developer and hope things go in the direction they desire.
Edit: As of version 0.3, it seems the Dev took all the criticism to the heart and worked hard on the mentioned quirks of the A.I. image generation. I don't know how he managed it, especially in this short amount of time. Maybe he did lot of photoshopping or generated hundreds of images to find the near perfect one, (I tried AI image generation too, it is so hard to get what you want, even if you feed reference image and tell it to do something specific.) but it seems most of the things I complained about are now alright and I'm sure all of them are gonna get sorted as well in the upcoming updates. Considering this is his first game and seeing this much improvement so quickly, I can safely say he is one of the positive Devs that I mentioned earlier, the kind that has a passion and vision that now he can create with the help of A.I.
