Why is there a separate sign for it?

In theory you are right, in practical terms it's often used for 2.560 x 1.440 , now please don't ask me why.

It's not, though. 1080P is commonly referred as FullHD. 1280 x 720 is HD, 1920 x 1080 is FullHD, 2560 x 1440 is 2k, 3840x2160 is 4K.
