RPGM - Completed - Sakura Gozen [v1.10] [kaniheadcrab]

I'll be honest, I don't vibe with this game on so much of the adult content in it, and it don't even matter. This is a spoiler free review, but the end of chapter 1 had me like "I did NOT sign up for this...but what happens next?"

By the end of the game, I had absolutely no interest in any of the H-scenes, but I pushed through because this game is insanity incarnate and I HAD to see the end, only reason I don't give it 5 stars, is that combat can be trivialized for every single encounter in the game by the end of chapter 1 or early in chapter 2 (whenever you get the ability to replay boss fights), and yes, because there's so much adult content and fetishes that I have no interest in seeing in this game.

If you took out all the H-scenes in this game, it'd be much less popular most likely, but you'd still be left with a surprisingly dark but not grimdark samurai story about how to move forward into the future, and also the plot would still be god damn loco for cocopuffs in the best way possible in my opinion.

This is about as far away from my taste as possible in some ways, and yet it's damn amazing purely by just being whatever the hell it wants to be.

Which I can't quite describe what that is without heavy spoilers, and I'm also still not sure I fully understand it because it throws A LOT at you all at once, but the basis for combat is solid, the story is great even if you toss out all the sexual themes, the art is perfect even down to the pixel for sprites, the soundtrack goes WAY harder than it has any right to at certain parts of the game, and even though yes it's definitely got stuff in it that's way too niche for me personally, it's got H-scenes for just about every kind of person on this site.

Plus I'm pretty sure there's no mandatory H-scenes in the entire game, everything is tagged, and every scene gives you the option to skip I'm pretty sure if any of the content isn't your cup of tea. (But I will also say I could be wrong, since my brain is fried after playing this game, and there may be some scenes you only get the option to skip on a replay, but I don't think so, but take this with a grain of salt and just know that there's options to get around anything you don't wanna see, and I know for certain all the prostitution and failure scenes are skippable, again, at least according to memory.

8/10, never playing again, not because it's bad, but because it's A LOT.

Curious what the dev may do in the future but I damn sure need a break after this game.

Great non-standard RPGM game with a ton of quality of life features and lots of H scenes.

Gameplay
The game is very unusual for an RPGM game. That begins with the side-view perspective instead of the standard top-down one. This makes the maps smaller and removes bloat.
The fights have several small gimicks that make them more entertaining than standard RPGM fare. More importantly: you can skip most of them. You only have to beat a few mobs in each area to unlock the ability to insta-kill them. That leaves the boss fights and even those are usually over within a few turns. That leaves the fights as a nice distraction instead of the main focus like it is in a lot of other games.
Instead you are mostly doing odd jobs for the townsfolk. Those are usually pretty simple and include a lot of banter with the characters. The characters are all very silly and charming in their own right. The main story even has some trule epic or touching moments.
All this is somewhat diminished by the writing. I don't know if it is the translation at fault or if it is the original writing but there are a lot of situations where characters will just talk and talk without saying anything. Oftentime it feels like they talk past each other or just bring up random crap that has nothing to do with what they are actually talking about.

There are a lot of scenes here. There is brothel work, each outfit has a unique scene to it, most side-quests have scenes, bosses have loss scenes. The boss scenes are very comfortable to get. You can insta-lose with an item, get the scene and respwand right before the boss and skip all pre-fight dialog. No annoying walk-backs here.
Most of the scenes are with the MC but there are also a lot with the supporting girls or side characters. They all come with a list of tags right before a scene that lets you skip what you don't want to see.

It scratches my fetish, amazing story, good gameplay, I love every character on my screen, nothing else I can ask for.

After finishing the first chapter, I'm determined to find the happy ending. If you don't mind selling your body (for collecting CG anyway), you can accumulate money extremely quickly, but you can also avoid it and grind a little bit longer.

I'm not much for reviewing things usually, but this is a great game by all counts from me. The gameplay is solid and fun, there is pretty much no grinding, the story is charming with funny and intense moments both. The lewd content was also quite good, with high-quality drawings and a variety of different scenes. All in all, it's great.

The main appeal of this game is the story. It's excellent.

It mainly is comedic with a lot of action sprinkled in, but does not pull it's punches in dramatic moments.
This reminds me a lot of the Yakuza games, that entwine comedy, action and drama too.

The best part of the story are the characters. All of them feel alive, both major and minor characters.
The lovably silly banter and the depth/complexity of the main cast is memorable.
The side characters fill the town with a lively atmosphere too, though that part is mostly comedic.

On a side note, the music is good and fits the current atmosphere.


The gameplay is alright.

The combat system has good mechanics, but lacks depth beyond "Exploit correct weakness, use high power attacks to break enemy defense, use low power attacks to decimate enemy health afterwards".

The difficulty is low and the bosses are relatively easy, albeit the boss fights are very memorable story wise.

The quests are fairly generic, but give a good sense of progression and sometimes really good rewards (like abilities to auto kill weak enemies, making dungeon trips a breeze).


The H-Content is alright.

It adds some depth to the story, but mostly for comedic moments. A lot of side quests have H-Content.
It barely matters during serious moments, aside from defeat scenes.

It adds some depth to the gameplay, but mostly for money grinding (Prostitution).
There are also regular money grinding methods via the dungeons, which give plenty money (but not as much as prostitution).

The actual H-Scenes are well drawn, though the sounds are generic.
Most of the H-Scenes are sexy, aside specific fetish scenes, which is a subjective topic.
Several defeat H-Scenes are ugly, though nearly all of them add story value funnily enough (mostly minor, sometimes major).

One of the best RPGM games I've played. Amongst rpgm games there's a ton of slop and filler games that feel so quickly thrown together with barely any effort put into them but this game really stands out as something special. The comedy is quite nice, the art is well done, the h content is varied, and the story has enough twists and turns to keep you interested in it beyond just looking for the next h scene.

All that being said this is still pretty standard rpgm fare in some places. The combat is pretty easy and boring, and there is a degree of grind here that I wish they didn't include, though it is eased as the game goes on due to mechanics that enable the bypassing of encounters after fighting a certain number in an area. My only other issue is that a lot of h content is gated beyond fail states in quests like failing a battle or something. I understand that logically this makes sense and its a staple in a lot of games but I really dislike this. All it does is encourage the player to play through situations twice, adding more grind to the game which is entirely unnecessary. You don't HAVE to do this but I don't want to miss out on h content just by doing what the game wants me to do. Its just bad design though its standard in many games so I don't really blame this dev in particular.

All in all a really great game and I hope the devs go onto make more content!

Great game.
I'll do a small breakdown.

The Good:
- fantastic art and lots of costumes for the mc
- lots of fetishes and cute side girls
- story might not be very "strong", but it is presented in an enjoyable, humorous and entertaining way
- and it unfolds with the help of likeable, nicely designed characters
- no "real" grind (provided you've read the hints regarding instakill items)
- neat qte fight system and cool boss fights

The Bad:
- some humour is lost in translation
- "corruption" progression does actually require some grinding of the same events and/or usage of items
- all the sex the main character has has no real impact on the story


Still, the bad didn't subtract from my enjoyment of the game as I stuck around long enough to unlock the last, "secret"-ish ending.
A solid recommendation.

Holy fuck. You go into this with no expectations and end up being blown away.
Of course, it's not like it has music or art is rivalling Elden Ring or anything but the quality is far beyond the paygrade. Also, the scenes have tags that tell you what was about to happen, which is a major upgrade from the last game, The Monstrous Horror Show.
The only real weakness was that the combat was so forgiving it became piss easy, but it was ok because of the story heavy gameplay that made the game more like a VN than anything, and I hate visual novels, so what does that say?
So go buy the game, try the trial version. whatever. Just play it already

EXCELLENT game. It takes a very hard comedic route, but it's able to switch off and become so much more when it chooses to. Highly recommend for anyone looking to play a game that has story first and porn second. Speaking of which, most games which take that route tend to have either bad porn and good story, or good porn and a bad story. This is in the middle and is able to execute both quite well.

I love how the devs drop in little mentions and hints of events that happened in the past, and how it's impacting the current setting. The item descriptions are a good read, and you slowly put together some extra context that adds so much more to certain scenes.

The characters are surprisingly charming. Everyone grew on me, and I especially grew fond of Tokuro, Suzune, and Sakura herself. Everyone is badass in their own way though, and gets their moment to shine.

5/5. Highly recommend, and I'm definitely going to play the dev's other game afterwards.

I have my complaints but it's overshadowed by just.. all of the rest.

Game CG and scene CG are all great, story and characters are fantastic, scenes are hot and (reasonably) well-written.

Warning: Pacing is good for a game with porn. if you're looking for porn with game, this may not be it.

Some tips: Don't buy/craft/unlock anything unless you need it for a specific scene. You'll get access to better money later, weapon upgrades aren't necessary, and grinding is annoying.

If you do need to grind, going in and out of the farming zones a few times will spawn extra enemies that you can then mow down all at once.

tried it thinking it might be good but slightly skeptical because of HUGE boobs. was surprised that isn't just good but REALLY good!
GREAT story and one of the only times a plot twist has actually got me.

Genuine peak. From the first sight, it seemed like a game that a person would just do a quick beat then discard it right after. But, the utter, UTTER tonal whiplash after chapter 1? Amazing. Surpassed my initial expectations. Also lore is surprisingly deep (but not too deep, just moderate)
Characters are also very loveable too.
Had to lock TF in after chapter 1. Game turned from a ero game to a game with optional h-scenes that you can skip.
But the actual gameplay itself when excepting the story?
Shite. Meh at best. You're also able to grind beforehand via memories which can pretty much dominate everything ahead of you if you do so.
The translation is ok.

Porn scenes are also ok. It's just depends on your taste. Though, I must comment on the fact that you can craft keys to unlock scenes in the gallery (which you can basically do for everything if you're lazy)
Music choice is also pretty good, surprisingly enough.

I really love this game story you guys should try for yourself you will love it trust me. Games with time loop is always peak in my book.

But there's one small issue I have with this game and is that the combat get pretty easy near endgame like every boss you encounter because alot more simple to defeat because all them have the same move set.

Overall the game is really game hope there's more hgames like this one.

Came for the fap, played the whole game for the goddamn story. This is peak fiction.

Some people will say that this has a generic story but if every time loop story is generic then every medieval story is generic. Why are people saying this story is generic? I have no fucking clue. Believe me you'll have your pants flown off you after finishing chapter 1.

Extremely high effort, high quality game, reminds me of Alicesoft games.
Tons of variety of H-scenes with different characters, position, costumes, kinks and a lot of them are animated.

The game is very quest-based where the gameplay loop is just accepting and completing random quests for rewards.

Sidescrolling game, so some people might find the town annoying to traverse through.

they're trying to be creative with the gameplay with QTE stuff, but at its core it's just another turn-based RPGMaker combat

As a game, even though it's VISUALLY very charming, it's not really fun to play, but worth it for the H scenes

i come for the futa tag, but i stayed for the stories.

Well, apparently i need to put 200 characters so here is my thought :

Superbe and dynamic combat system.
Golden stories With a fire pencil.
lovable characters.

The only bad point i see is the farming who can be a little long.

The high rating is undeserved, with many people overlooking the serious flaws in gameplay and story because of good CGs.
Even tough the CGs are good the scenes themselves are unimaginative and mostly stand alone with little buildup or tie into the story. For example the different costumes consist of a few lines of dialogue and a very generic scene. Overall the scenes and fetishes really fell like quantity over quality with next to zero integration to the broader game.
Another aspect often praised in other reviews are the gameplay, even though the gameplay isn't generic it isn't unique either or well executed.
Overall a mediocre game I wouldn't even really recommend for the gallery as all the scenes are executed better in other games.

Time To Beat: 13~ Hours

Excellent art, a wide variety of fetishes, great quality of life and anti-grinding features would've made this an easy recommend out the gate. However, what's really sets Sakura Gozen is that the story, while not wholly original, is compelling because the cast are well defined and the comedy is consistently good.

As an added bonus, unlocking all the CGs doesn't take my effort or isn't gated by the story. I can't recommend this game enough!

This game is absolutely off the wall crazy. It appears to be a typical ero corruption RPG, but opens up into something way bigger with story, depth, humor and tragedy all spiraling into one of the best h games i've ever played. Trust me, it's worth your time if you like the preview images at all, and don't mind a giant crazy adventure.


The good:
- A LOT of ero scenes, semi-animated, well translated and covers most kinks
- A lot of secrets, exploration, odd things to uncover, create
- Humorous and tragic story with hot moments, disturbing moments, I think it pulls it off where others really can't (Great translation helps here)
- Gallery hints and items which help you unlock everything make it a lot less painful to get scenes and events to happen.

The bad:
- Takes time to open up and unlock scenes
- At times, grinding is unavoidable, becomes a total non-issue later
- Secrets and small events can be very easily missed, from containers that look like background decor, to npcs that give you things after certain things happen.
- Very chaotic, can make the story hard to follow in a serious regard, small details are extremely meaningful and maybe just never fully understood
