Should I make a game if the idea was already done?

Can you imagine if everyone avoided making a game just because there was a similar premise out there already? 90% of the games on here would never be started.

How similar are you talking about? Similar art style? Similar gameplay? How many tags would be the same? If it's not very similar in most ways I wouldn't give it a second thought. Just make the game you want to make.

Why would it be wrong?

The wheel is one of the rare inventions in humankind that is hardly to be made better but everything else can improve with new ideas, new angles of thinking etc. Or to put it in the gaming world, imagine after Diablo was made nobody else made other versions of hack & slash arpgs.

Think of it as a miracle to invent something completely unique today. Well, it's rare that two creators with the same idea end up doing the same thing, because each one will have his own peculiarities, his own ideas, and so on.

Unless it's total plagiarism, but then there's no point.

So if you want to do it, go ahead and make it and give the community a good game! There's room for everyone, as long as you respect the players and each other.

To quote South Park:
Simpsons did it.
There are no truly original ideas and we all stand on the shoulders of those before us. You probably still have put your own spin on it.

Fashion industry is very famous for this. There is only a limited ways in which you can dress people functionally, so every so often fashion trends repeat. The only thing that is worth anything are the logo's of the brands (that is why luxury brands plaster them all over their products).

I've started making a game called "Lust Note".

Basically, a parody of death note.

Looking around, there already seems to be a game that has done this

https://f95zone.to/threads/sexnote-v0-23-0a-jamliz.31991/

I've never played that game, but I already guessed someone did something like this.

Would it be wrong to continue development?
People will always complain about everything, that's the first thing you need to learn. Do whatever you want to do and avoid useless comments.

"If it was already done" - Then do what any artist does and make "adaptations", aka, do changes you think are for the better. Copying one source is plagiarism, copying from several is inspiration.

Now, the real question is, can you actually do a game like what you described?

Sexnote has nothing to do with Death Note.
Meanwhile, the actual game overview:

Living with his two adoptive mothers and stepsister made him shy with girls, until one day, he was sitting in the classroom and saw a book falling from the sky... That book was a SexNote, a book that will introduce him to the magic power, where he will acquire a lot of magical skills with the help of Brixxida the guardian demon of the book, changing his life forever and the way he interacts with his friends, family, and new enemies...

Hmmmm, what does this remind me of... Nope, can't remember.

Let us pause here for a second. You're asking if it's wrong to write a fanfic, because someone has already written one for that particular source story you chose.

Bro. This is just sad. Either you have a moral issue with plagiarism in general or there's nothing wrong with taking inspiration. So either the whole idea of borrowing creative ideas from non-porn anime for your porn game is wrong, or it's safe to disregard your competition. It's not like they can sue you, themselves being on such shaky grounds (plus, they have incest = Damocles' banhammer looming over them)

I'm just not sure what the adult community is okay with or not haha. For example NTR, I have no issues with it but from what I've seen many are disgusted by it, which I didn't expect. (but it makes sense)

I wanted to ask if it's wrong in order to see if people have an issue with me taking basically the same idea (notebook falls, lets you mind control people to sexual situations). I wouldn't just discard my game, but change the way the power works, I guess. I respect the work of others, but you are certainly right.

Fair. Well, rest assured, the degens here don't really care even about fairly blatant art theft. Unless your game really copies Sexnote in every meaningful way (death note inspiration + incest + shota + grotesquely big boobs) which can realistically happen only if you had an explicit goal to clone it, no one will care. There are multiple Harry Potter games, at least 3 Gravity Falls games, countless superhero games, and the list goes on.

With NTR, people aren't generally mad about NTR per se, they are mad about a gamedev deciding to include it mid developement, therefore breaking audience's expectations. To avoid that, clearly state what content your game will have, what content your game won't have. And most importantly you need to keep that promise.

like somebody said before, there will ALWAYS be commenters who will loudly hate your game, that's just a fact of life. nothing you do, nothing you change in your game will stop that from happening. so you just need to accept it and ignore. and do whatever works for YOU best.

it might help to remember that those loud haters are rarely more than 3-5 people per a flaming buscrash of a game thread. they're not representative of any group, and more importantly clearly not your target audience.

so you should avoid giving in to their psychological pressure like the plague. they're the exact worst people to listen, there's no group of people that can give you worse advice than haters.

"Book falling from the sky" is literally the only similarity, which couldn't be more generic. I played the entire game, it's not a parody of Death Note. In order to be a parody of something you'd expect to meet familiar characters or modified versions of them, have a story somewhat similar to the original and so on.

And what other works of fiction feature this generic element? Can you name one more? Maybe it's generic irl? When was the last time you saw a book falling from the sky?

Here are four obvious similarities just from the snippet I gave:

1. The name. Sex note <-> death note. Not the book of sex, sex book, book of lust, book of mind control, etc. The connection is obvious.
2. A book falls from the sky. Contrary to what you state, it's not a generic trope. It is very specific and very rare.
3. The book grants magical powers.
4. The book has a demon guardian.

Obviously it's not a full on Death Note pornification, I suspect because one notable female character is simply not enough. That doesn't mean its titular plot isn't blatantly cribbed from Death Note.

So if you make a game about someone who needs to find one sheepball, and it takes place in the year 4500, instead of humans its dwarfs riding unicorns, and the player tries to be the best Barista in town, making coffee in every episode, and if he finds the sheepball his coffee will turn dwarfs into normal-sized humans, would you consider that a parody of Dragonball?

Tell me what aspects of Dragonball are being parodied here? Apart from that there's a ball which has the name of some animal ahead and that it does *something* when being found, there are zero similarities.

Meanwhile there are games where you play Muten Roshi in the dragon ball world, visit famous dragon ball places and fuck famous characters from the show. Which of both is the dragon ball parody?

Do you know how many fictional works are out there where heros pick up some sort of magic book, from wherever it might come or fall, and gain magical powers through it?

I don't know. I asked you. So. How many works of fiction are there, that feature a magical book falling out of the sky.

Name. One.
