I notice sidescrollers where scenes are mostly offered on either game over or in the middle of the gameplay and while these can be pretty cool, I would prefer ones where the scenes can be obtained when you beat the level or at least where you don't have to get a game over.
Alternatively, ones like Lorain or Lutelleria where you initiate are also pretty cool
